Compression screw internal fixation versus non-weight-bearing cast immobilization for Jones fractures in children

Metatarsal fractures account for less than 6% of all pediatric fractures, with fifth metatarsal fractures being the most common among these [1,2]. Fractures of the fifth metatarsal base were first described by Sir Robert Jones in 1902. He presented six cases of proximal fifth metatarsal fractures caused by indirect violence attributed to plantar flexion of the foot, anterior foot varus, transfer of the body's center of gravity, and sudden contraction of the peroneus brevis [3]. However, Jones did not describe a formal classification system; instead, he described the eponymous fracture as occurring within approximately three-fourths of an inch from the base of the fifth metatarsal.
