Trailblazing Women: Female Nobel laureates in medicine as role models

When I started working as a young surgeon in Sweden in the eighties, 15% of my colleagues were women. This number was somewhat higher among breast and endocrine surgeons and slightly lower among vascular and upper GI surgeons. As I started engaging in clinical research, I also faced the tremendous underrepresentation of women in higher academic positions. A telling fact in this context is that the first female full professor in surgery in Sweden was appointed as late as 2013.
