In the US, family and unpaid caregivers are the primary source of assistance to older adults with care needs who are living in the community. In addition, paid services and supports, such as personal care and household assistance, may augment help from family and unpaid caregivers. Residential care settings —including assisted living and long-term nursing facilities—most often serve older adults with the most substantial care needs.
