Comment on: Risk stratified venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in bariatric patients using Caprini assessment: practice patterns and opportunities for improvement

We have read with great interest the study from Edwards et al. on risk-stratified venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis using Caprini assessment in 1,849 bariatric surgery cases, including gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The study shows that 70% received appropriate VTE prophylaxis during hospitalization. However, only 3.7% received appropriate VTE prophylaxis at discharge with higher Caprini scores in those without appropriate prophylaxis. While in-hospital VTE rates were low, all discharge VTE events occurred in patients without proper prophylaxis.
