“But I'm a Good Driver!”: A Standardized Patient Simulation to Teach Nurse Practitioner Students to Screen Older Adult Drivers

In the United States (US) approximately one in five automobile drivers are 65 or older (US  Department of Transportation, 2020). For older adults, driving maintains community mobility, independence, connection with society, and facilitates self-care (Stav& Ekelman,  2018). Common age-related changes in cognitive, psychomotor, and visual-perceptual domains and the effects of diseases and medications can negatively impact driving performance and place older adults at higher risk of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) (Pomidor, 2019).
