Translate a Document Instantly with Lexmark Translation Assistant

One of the coolest things about my work here at Healthcare IT Today is when I see something that almost feels magical.  In most cases, that’s when multiple technologies are brought together in a way that the solution is just incredible.  This is how I felt when I saw the new Translation Assistant product from Lexmark. Watch the full demo video with Seth Johnson, Industry Director for Healthcare at Lexmark, below to see the solution in action.  However, the solution is really quite simple.  You can scan in any document to the Lexmark scanner and it will print out (or email) a translated version of the document nearly instantly.  That’s a great solution that can make almost any document more accessible to patients in a wide variety of languages. When you think about the technology behind this, the solution makes sense.  The Lexmark scanner takes the scanned image and applies OCR to the document to pull out the text and using the Azure cloud services, translates the document text to your choice of language.  Then, it reapplies the translated text back to your document and prints it out.  You do lose some formatting on the translated document, but that generally doesn’t have an impact and is much less valuable than the patient being able to read a document in their native language.
