Condom as substance abuse: An emerging threat to public health

Illicit drug abuse continues to engage about 284 million people all across the globe, with the mortality rate increasing alarmingly (UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), 2022). Although substance abuse is a concern for all age groups and demographics, unusual cases can be predominantly observed among adolescents and young adults in high schools or colleges. Exposure to stressors, peer pressure, lack of cognitive tools and unhealthy coping mechanisms coupled with an under-developed prefrontal cortex might impede decision making, emotional self-regulation, and impulse control, making them more vulnerable to substance abuse (Sinha, 2008).
