Wednesday Bible Study: Thank God it ' s almost over

" It " being Chronicles. This chapter is interesting textually simply because the same story is told much more briefly in Kings, where the Passover only takes three verses, IIRC. Since Kings was written in part as a panegyric to Josiah, it ' s curious that this existed but was not included. What could be the source? My best guess is that it was originally in the Book of Kings, was somehow omitted from the canonical version but was still there at the time Chronicles was first compiled.  On the other hand, Kings gives a better explanation of the events that ended Josiah ' s life, which are quite mysterious here. What is happening is that Pharaoh Necho is attacking Assyria, and for some reason -- perhaps unwisely, given later events -- Josiah doesn ' t want him to succeed. Presumably Josiah sees an expansionist Egypt as a greater threat. Anyway, in both versions he is killed in the attempt. Rejoice, only one chapter left of Chronicles.35 Josiah celebrated the Passover to theLord in Jerusalem, and the Passover lamb was slaughtered on the fourteenth day of the first month.2 He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of theLord’s temple.3 He said to the Levites, who instructed all Israel and who had been consecrated to theLord: “Put the sacred ark in the temple that Solomon son of David king of Israel built.
