Benign inflammatory vulval dermatoses: diagnostic approach and management strategies

Vulval dermatoses present with distressing symptoms, alongside sensitive psychological and psychosexual issues. There is an incorrect belief amongst a subset of patients and also clinicians that most genital symptoms result from infections. The diagnosis and management of skin diseases is broadly applicable to genital disorders as well. Normal anatomical variants can often be confused with pathological changes and clinical findings may be subtle. Thus, it is vital to examine patients early, to recognize salient features of common dermatoses and avoid empirical treatments based on symptoms alone.
