Hyperglycemia in the Perioperative Period

Complications, including infection and mortality, are associated with hyperglycemia in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. Stress hyperglycemia results in a state of insulin resistance. Insulin administration has been shown to reduce the complications associated with hyperglycemia. Glycemic targets provide goals for individualized treatment of hyperglycemia in surgical patients in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods.
