Assessing the frequency of CD163+ tumor-associated macrophages and CD3+ T lymphocytes between MGUS and plasma cell myeloma

Plasma cell dyscrasias (PCDs) are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the expansion of monoclonal bone marrow (BM) plasma cells [1]. The most common is monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), which is a premalignant PCD that consistently precedes multiple myeloma (MM), with a 1% risk of progression per year [2,3]. MGUS is found in 3.2% of individuals aged ≥50 years and 5.3% of those aged ≥70 years, increasing to 8.9% of men aged ≥85 years [4,5]. Because MGUS is more prevalent as we age, it follows that the incidence of MM is also strongly associated with age.
