Short-term tolerability of commercial eyelid cleansers: A randomised crossover study

Blepharitis is a highly prevalent ophthalmic condition, which is characterised by chronic inflammation of the eyelid tissues [1]. The condition is recognised to have significant impacts on ocular comfort, visual function, and quality of life [2 –4]. The complex multifactorial pathophysiology of blepharitis is not fully understood [1,2], although ocular infestation with Demodex mites has been identified as a significant risk factor [5,6]. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis infestation are usually observed in the eyelash follicles and meibomian glands, respectively [7–11], and can lead to structural obstruction, cellular destruction, and bacterial hypercolonisation [12,13], thereby triggering an overactivation of host immune and inflammatory responses [14].
