Atrial fibrillation anticoagulation care in a large urban family medicine practice.
CONCLUSION: When assessed using the 2012 Canadian Cardiovascular Society AF guidelines, the proportion of patients receiving appropriate SPAF therapy in this primary care setting decreased substantially. All patients with CHADS2 scores of 0 or 1 should be reassessed to ensure that they are receiving optimal stroke prevention treatment. PMID: 24627401 [PubMed - in process]

Patients' responses to transient ischaemic attack symptoms: a cross-sectional questionnaire study in Australian general practices.
CONCLUSION: Most general practice attendees expressed intentions to seek health care urgently for most symptoms suggestive of TIA, with highest levels of urgency observed in high stroke-risk scenarios. Intentions were not associated with a number of major risk factors for TIA and might be improved by further educational interventions, either targeted or at population level. Screening of older patients for atrial fibrillation in general practice: Current evidence and its implications for future practice.
CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that improved detection and diagnosis of AF, combined with appropriate anticoagulation strategies, will be crucial for improving stroke prevention and reducing its associated social and economic costs. PMID: 29034749 [PubMed - in process]

Two-year outcomes of UK patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation: findings from the prospective observational cohort study GARFIELD-AF
CONCLUSION: The data support a benefit of anticoagulation in reducing stroke and death, without an increased risk of a major bleed in patients with new-onset AF. Anticoagulation treatment in patients at high risk of stroke who are not receiving anticoagulation may further improve outcomes.PMID:35577587 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2021.0548

Atrial fibrillation: from detection to treatment. Role of the family physician, cardiologist and other specialists. New models of clinical management.
Abstract The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in adults in Spain is estimated to be 4.4% of the population aged 40 years or more, corresponding to a mean of 30 to 40 patients per family physician. The importance of this common arrhythmia lies, above all, in its close association with stroke and other systemic embolisms, among other possible complications. Diagnosis of AF is based on electrocardiographic recording and can consequently be made by the family physician, who should make an overall assessment of the patient's health, including risk factors, comorbidity and type of AF and evaluate embolic and hemor...

Heat-Related Illnesses.
Abstract Heat-related illnesses comprise a spectrum of syndromes resulting from disruption of thermoregulation in people exposed to high environmental heat. Symptoms range from heat edema and exercise-associated muscle cramps to exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke. Athletes, outdoor laborers, and military personnel are at greatest risk. Several intrinsic and extrinsic factors increase the risk of heat-related illness, including medical conditions, environmental factors, medication use, and inadequate acclimatization. Proper recognition and treatment are effective in prev...
