Stroke Patients Show Signs Of Recovery Following Stem Cell Trial
As one of the first ever trials to test the safety of stem cells as a treatment for stroke draws to a close, investigators report there appear to be no harmful side effects. Most patients have also shown modest improvements although it is too early to say if this is as a result of the treatment...

Stem cell stroke treatment trial results 'show promise'
This study looked at the safety and tolerability of a stem cell therapy called ReN001 in the treatment of ischaemic stroke, where the blood supply to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. The findings, which were reported in a press release, suggest that the nine people included in the study experienced no adverse effects and showed a modest improvement in stroke-related symptoms. However, the full findings from the PISCES trial are yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Until this happens, it is worth exercising a little healthy scepticism about the claims being made. This research is still at a very early s...

New Astrocytes Play Unexpected Role In Healing After Brain Injury
The production of a certain kind of brain cell that had been considered an impediment to healing may actually be needed to staunch bleeding and promote repair after a stroke or head trauma, researchers at Duke Medicine report. These cells, known as astrocytes, can be produced from stem cells in the brain after injury. They migrate to the site of damage where they are much more effective in promoting recovery than previously thought. This insight from studies in mice, reported online in the journal Nature, may help researchers develop treatments that foster brain repair...

First Stroke Patients In Florida Treated In UM Stem Cell Trial
The first two stroke patients have been enrolled in a phase 2 clinical trial of a revolutionary new treatment for ischemic stroke being conducted at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. The trial, using a patient's own bone marrow stem cells, is the first intra-arterial stroke stem cell trial in the U.S., and the two UM/Jackson patients are the first in Florida to participate. Led by Dileep Yavagal, M.D...

Stroke Recovery Aided By Stem Cells
Stem cells from bone marrow or fat improve recovery after stroke in rats, finds a study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Treatment with stem cells improved the amount of brain and nerve repair and the ability of the animals to complete behavioural tasks. Stem cell therapy holds promise for patients but there are many questions which need to be answered, regarding treatment protocols and which cell types to use. This research attempts to address some of these questions...

Do epilepsy and migraine share a genetic link?
Conclusion This paper suggests there is a link between the number of close relatives with a seizure disorder and the likelihood that an individual with epilepsy will also suffer from migraines with aura. However, it seems that the researchers were only interested in what they term ‘additional’ family members, and did not take into account the fact that to be eligible for this study at least two siblings or a parent and child both had to suffer from epilepsy. There seems to be the possibility that if, for example, four members of a family were enrolled in the study but the family had no further affected members, all me...
