Abstract 11: Use of Novel Anticoagulants Among Atrial Fibrillation Patients Hospitalized with Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack: A Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Registry Analysis Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstract Presentations on Stroke Topics
Conclusion: Among patients with AF and acute ischemic stroke or TIA discharged on oral anticoagulants, NAC use remains low and is prescribed to younger, more functional, and lower risk patients.

Abstract 12: Evaluation of Medical Costs Associated with Use of Novel Oral Anticoagulants Compared with Warfarin Among Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Moderate and High Stroke Risk Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstract Presentations on Stroke Topics
Conclusions: Of the three NOACs, apixaban demonstrated greater medical cost reductions relative to warfarin among NVAF patients at moderate and high stroke risk. The medical cost reduction associated with apixaban use instead of warfarin was greater for NVAF patients at higher stroke risk vs. those at moderate stroke risk and was driven primarily by higher absolute reductions in clinical event rates for major bleeding, stroke and systemic embolism.

Abstract 25: Predicting Outcomes among Patients with Heart Failure Receiving Anticoagulation with Warfarin Concurrent III Session A: Oral Abstract Presentations on EHS & Health IT
Conclusion: We developed a composite score for CHF severity which predicted both anticoagulation control and the rate of major hemorrhage among patients anticoagulated with warfarin. This study suggests that relatively easily observable characteristics can be used to risk-stratify patients with CHF who are receiving anticoagulation for AF.

Abstract 63: The Smoking Paradox in Patients Hospitalized with Coronary Artery Disease: Findings from Get With The Guidelines - CAD Poster Session I
Conclusion: Smoking continues to be a major risk factor for presenting with CAD at a much younger age and with fewer risk factors. It is likely that the continued modest association with lower in-hospital mortality in smokers in this analysis after adjustment reflects residual or unmeasured confounding. This apparent smoker’s paradox in CAD should not be interpreted as a benefit of cigarette smoking.

Abstract 79: Reasons for Warfarin Discontinuation in the Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (ORBIT-AF) Poster Session I
Conclusions. Discontinuation of warfarin is common among patients with atrial fibrillation. Patient and physician preference are major contributors to persistence on warfarin therapy.

Abstract 95: Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Emergency Department Encounters where Dabigatran Etexilate was Administered are Associated with Lower Admission Rate Compared to Encounters where Warfarin was Administered Poster Session I
Conclusions: While the vast majority of AF encounters initiated in the ED result in admission, encounters where patients were treated with DE as continuing or new therapy were less likely to be admitted compared to similar encounters where warfarin was administered.

Abstract 156: Body Mass Index and Outcomes among Patients with Atrial Fibrillation from the ATRIA2-CVRN Study Poster Session II
In conclusion, overweight and moderate obesity appear protective for all-cause mortality in at-risk AF patients during off-warfarin periods, but these effects do not appear to be mediated by reduced risk of thromboembolism or major bleeding.

Abstract 198: Racial Disparity In Resuming Anticoagulation For Atrial Fibrillation After An Episode Of Major Gastrointestinal Bleeding Poster Session II
Conclusion: In conclusion, the racial disparity in resuming warfarin after an episode of major GIB in anticoagulated patients for atrial fibrillation was more for Caucasians than African American. This may be explained by uncertainty of outcomes that frequently leads to overtreatment of minority patients. Cultural beliefs for not resuming warfarin might have also played a role.

Abstract 200: Cost-Effectiveness of Newer Anticoagulants for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation Poster Session II
Conclusions: Cost-effectiveness models of newer anticoagulants for SPAF have been extensively published. Models have frequently found newer anticoagulants to be cost-effective, but due to the lack of head-to-head trial comparisons and heterogeneity in clinical characteristic of underlying trials and modeling methods, it is currently unclear which of these newer agents is most cost-effective.

Abstract 201: Predictors of Stroke in Hospitalized Patients with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Poster Session II
Conclusion: Stroke develops in 8.16% of patients admitted with TTP. The independent predictors of stroke in this group of patients are age, white race, dyslipidemia, and AMI.

Abstract 203: Outcomes Comparison of Low Risk Medical and Surgical Patients Treated with Unfractionated Heparin vs. Enoxaparin Poster Session II
Conclusions: In low-risk medical and general surgical patients, UFH was as effective as enoxaparin in the prevention of thromboembolic events, with no difference in the incidence of HIT. When compared to UFH, enoxaparin was associated with lower MI and mortality rates, and shorter LOS and ICU LOS, at the expense of higher rates of stroke and TIA. Enoxaparin was associated with lower total inpatient costs than UFH.

Abstract 205: New Onset Heart Failure and Adverse Ischemic Events Associated with Amiodarone and Dronedarone Use among Atrial Fibrillation Patients Poster Session II
Conclusions: In a propensity score matched observational cohort study, amiodarone use was associated with higher incidence rate of new onset HF, HF hospitalizations, and TIA as identified from claims. This finding differs from other clinical studies. Future observational cohort studies should incorporate medical record review for validation since information from claims might be insufficient to fully account for underlying patient risk status, or accurately determine if HF was new onset.Key words: amiodarone; dronedarone; atrial fibrillation; heart failure.

Abstract 211: Association of Patient Characteristics With the Initiation of Dabigatran Versus Warfarin Among Anticoagulant Naive Patients With Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation Poster Session II
Conclusions: Patients who are younger, male, Caucasian, and recently diagnosed with NVAF were significantly more likely to be initiated by their physician on DE vs. warfarin. These findings should be considered when doing comparative analyses of outcomes between patients on DE vs. warfarin.

Abstract 213: The Smoking Paradox in Acute Ischemic Stroke: Findings from Get With The Guidelines - Stroke Poster Session II
Conclusion: Smoking continues to be a major risk factor for presenting with acute ischemic stroke at a much younger age and with fewer vascular risk factors. The association with lower in-hospital mortality, even after covariate adjustment, may represent residual confounding due to the marked age differences and unmeasured confounding or it may reflect a protective association. Further research is warranted.

Abstract 217: How well does the CHADS2 Stroke Risk Score Predict Major Hemorrhage in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation? Poster Session II
Conclusions: Although some clinical markers of stroke risk such as those included in the CHADS2 risk score are also associated with increased hemorrhage risk, the CHADS2 risk score should not be used instead of a validated hemorrhage risk tool to estimate hemorrhage risk.
