A Call to Action for the Professional Development of Mid-Career Faculty
Am J Pharm Educ. 2023 Sep;87(9):100044. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.01.005. Epub 2023 Mar 15.ABSTRACTDespite taking on heavier teaching and service loads, an expanding research program, and serving as mentors to junior faculty, mid-career faculty often feel unsupported. Providing a solid foundation through resource allocation and sharing between and within institutions can facilitate establishment or improvement of faculty development initiatives, workload equity, transparent policies, routine performance evaluation, a process for faculty recognition, and a system of mentoring to create an environment where this essential gro...

Design and Evaluation of an APPE Readiness Dashboard Tool
CONCLUSION: A dashboard tool facilitating holistic evaluation of APPE readiness was helpful in identifying students who were not ready for APPEs or at risk for substandard performance. The next steps include refinement of the tool through the evaluation of characteristics of students who experienced substandard performance and were not identified by the tool.PMID:37714660 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.01.003

A Genetics-Focused Lens on Social Constructs in Pharmacy Education
Am J Pharm Educ. 2023 Sep;87(9):100077. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.100077. Epub 2023 May 10.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism principles into clinical and didactic education is essential because each influence cognitive and affective attitudes in pharmacy practice. Educators must learn from the past to enlighten the future. For example, race is a social construct, not a biological construct. However, it persistently acts as a surrogate for determining medical diagnoses and treatment.FINDINGS: Precision medicine and pharmacogenomics can serve as a basis for deconstructing social co...

Automated Analysis of Preceptor Comments: A Pilot Study Using Sentiment Analysis to Identify Potential Student Issues in Experiential Education
CONCLUSION: This sentiment analysis algorithm was accurate in capturing positive and negative comments corresponding to pharmacy student performance. Given the accuracy of this preliminary validation for flagging preceptor comments, there are numerous implications when considering the use of sentiment analysis in pharmacy education. Using a sentiment analysis program minimizes the number of qualitative preceptor comments needing review by experiential faculty, as this program can aid in identifying students at risk of progression issues.PMID:37714650 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2023.02.005
