Families Suffer As Medical Examiners Struggle With Backlogs
BOSTON (AP) — One of the most difficult things about losing her son was not knowing why. Rosanne Carruthers needed to understand how an active, outdoorsy man with no apparent health problems could drop dead at 34. Carruthers, a nurse, performed CPR after her son, Neil, collapsed in their suburban Boston home. For more than a year, she wondered: Was there something more she could have done? And were her daughter and her grandchildren at risk, too? For the Carruthers family and others across the country, long delays in receiving death certificates and autopsy reports from medical examiners can not only compound grief, but ...

Medical Students And Residents Have Frequent Interactions With Pharmaceutical Companies, Survey Reveals

The study was completed by a team of researchers led by fourth-year Harvard Medical School student Kirsten Austad and Aaron Kesselheim, M.D., J.D., M.P.H...

UMass Medical Using ‘Virtual Anatomy’ To Teach Students
BOSTON (CBS) — Human anatomy is one of the first courses a student has to take in medical school to study the body’s organs, nerves, vessels and more. Human cadavers have always been used for this purpose and probably always will be but UMass Medical School now has a new, high-tech tool at their disposal which is giving doctors a view into the body like never before. Third year medical students Scott Pascal and Pamela Lu are getting a lesson on human anatomy, but instead of dissecting a cadaver, they’re viewing the deep layers of the human body using this virtual anatomy table. “Going through anatom...

UMass ‘Sidekicks’ Program Matches Medical Students With Sick Children
WORCESTER (CBS) – A student program at UMass Medical School is helping take the fear out of medical treatments for some children. Hospitals are frightening to any child, but for children with life-threatening illnesses, who get poked and prodded, sometimes for years, the school offers something like a big brother program that makes going through treatment just a little bit easier. Dr. Naheed Usmani, a pediatric oncologist, developed the program called “Sidekicks” that matches medical students with very sick children undergoing treatment at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. “The medical students find it very me...

Mass. Medical Marijuana Shops Get Initial Clearance, Others Rejected
BOSTON (AP) — Eleven medical marijuana dispensaries have been cleared to move forward in Massachusetts while several others that had received initial clearance were rejected after a further review, state public health officials announced Friday. The process had been on hold for several months while the state worked to verify information provided in the applications of 20 companies that were initially given provisional clearance for licenses in January. Karen Van Unen, head of the state’s medical marijuana program, said the 11 remaining dispensaries survived the enhanced investigation process but will still be subje...

Mass. Woman Fired For Using Medical Marijuana
BOSTON (CBS) – Cristina Barbuto started a great new job last year. It lasted one day. “I felt discriminated against,” Barbuto told WBZ. “I felt like, this is wrong, this can’t be.” As a condition of her employment, Advantage Sales and Marketing gave Barbuto a drug test. “I wanted to be honest, so I was up front and honest with my supervisor and said, ‘You know, I am going to fail this part of the drug test, so I just wanted to make you aware,’” she explained. Barbuto has Crohn’s disease. When she’s suffering from a flare up, the pain can be excruciating. From time to time, she relies on...

NH Woman With Late-Stage Cancer To Get Medical Marijuana Card
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire health officials have approved a lung cancer patient’s application for an identification card that will allow her to buy medical marijuana in Maine. A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services said Linda Horan would be issued a card Wednesday, a day after a court granted her emergency request and ordered the state to review her application. The state had argued that issuing the 64-year-old Alstead woman a card before dispensaries open next year would undermine its need to control marijuana distribution, but Horan, who was diagnosed with late-stage cancer in July, a...

Medical news: A case for skepticism
When you read medical news, do you ever get drawn in by the headline only to find the details deliver something quite different (or less) than expected? Or do the findings sound so dramatic that you wonder whether the results might be exaggerated or misleading? If you answered yes, I’m with you. The reasons to be skeptical are many. And it’s not that there are evil people out there deliberately trying to mislead you — well, there are a few of those, but only a few. Pressures on those that bring us health news make it almost certain that at times, information will be biased, incomplete, or flat-out wrong. I’m not ta...

What the Netflix Documentary ‘Bleeding Edge’ Gets Right About the Dangers of Medical Devices in America
A new Netflix Original documentary sheds light on a topic that’s opaque to many: the medical device industry in America. The film, called The Bleeding Edge, claims that the way medical devices make it to the U.S. market is lax and potentially dangerous. The filmmakers interview doctors and patients who say they’ve been personally harmed by an array of devices—including cobalt-based hip replacements, vaginal mesh and robotic surgery devices—and who feel that the guardian group of the medical device industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is not doing enough to protect them. It’...

Tufts Medical Center Offers Unique Procedure To Combat Abnormal Heart Rhythm
BOSTON (CBS) — More than six million Americans have an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation. For some people, traditional treatments just don’t work but doctors at a local medical center are using a new procedure to get those patients back in normal rhythm. As the owner of an office cleaning service, 65-year old Pat DeGregorio walks about 10 miles a day, but three years ago, the Winthrop native woke up and could barely move. “I couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I was just gasping for air.” Pat was in an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation or AFib where pacemaker cells in the he...

Medical Students Graduate Early, Prepare To Join Fight Against Coronavirus
BOSTON (CBS) – Medical students from some of the top schools across the state will graduate early and could immediately be thrust into action in the fight against COVID-19. It’s an unprecedented timeline for fourth year students. “It’s scary to think a week ago we were matched, and then six days after told we might become physicians,” said UMass Medical School student Shruthi Srinivas. The call came from Governor Baker that the front lines of health care might need reinforcement if there’s a surge in coronavirus patients, and they’re ready to volunteer. “I’ve trained ...

Towns, Regulators Brace For Medical Marijuana
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts communities and state regulators are preparing for the new medical marijuana law that goes into effect Jan. 1. In November, state voters overwhelmingly approved the measure to legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The state Department of Public Health has until May 1 to issue regulations. Some communities, including Wakefield and Reading, have rushed to amend their zoning bylaws to ban marijuana dispensaries in their towns. Opponents of the law are concerned that the dispensaries will be ripe for abuse and could attract a criminal element. But the health department says it will i...

'Protecting' Psychiatric Medical Records Puts Patients At Risk Of Hospitalization
Medical centers that elect to keep psychiatric files private and separate from the rest of a person's medical record may be doing their patients a disservice, a Johns Hopkins study concludes. In a survey of psychiatry departments at 18 of the top American hospitals as ranked by U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals in 2007, a Johns Hopkins team learned that fewer than half of the hospitals had all inpatient psychiatric records in their electronic medical record systems and that fewer than 25 percent gave non-psychiatrists full access to those records...
