Pharmacological Management of Postoperative Delirium
Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2023 Sep;58(9):513-524. doi: 10.1055/a-2065-3780. Epub 2023 Sep 19.ABSTRACTPostoperative delirium (POD) is a complex disorder with significant implications for health and well-being. Over the last few years, there has been a significant increase in awareness of the pathophysiological processes, the different clinical forms and the prevention of POD. It is known that POD develops when anaesthetic- and surgery-related precipitating factors coincide with the patient's predisposing vulnerability. Consequently, assessing the preoperative physical, cognitive, psychological, social ...

Prevention of Post-operative Delirium
This article provides an overview on non-pharmacological preventive measures, divided into individualized and non-individualized measures. Non-individualized measures, such as the most minimally invasive surgical procedure, avoidance of unnecessary fasting before surgery, and the most tolerable anaesthesia are used to minimize the risk of POD in all patients. Based on the results of preoperative screenings for risk factors such as frailty or cognitive impairment, individualized measures may encompass prehabilitation, treatment of specific risk factors, operation room companionship or cognitive, motor, and sensory stimulati...

Practice of anaesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy
Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2023 Jul;58(7-08):422-435. doi: 10.1055/a-1925-6993. Epub 2023 Aug 15.ABSTRACTElectroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established therapeutic method for the treatment of severe mental disorders refractory to pharmaco- and psychotherapy. ECT is a first-line treatment option in delusional disorders, severe depression with acute suicidal tendency or life-threatening catatonia. Usually, ECT is performed as a treatment series. Under short-term anaesthesia and muscle relaxation, tonic-clonic seizures are induced using an external stimulation electrode. Convulsion can be exerted by un...

Anaesthesia and Sedation for Diagnostic Procedures in Children
Anasthesiol Intensivmed Notfallmed Schmerzther. 2023 Jul;58(7-08):409-420. doi: 10.1055/a-1925-7009. Epub 2023 Aug 15.ABSTRACTConstant medical progress leads to an increasing range of indications and consequently increasing number of diagnostic procedures in (early) childhood. To prevent lasting traumatization of children (and parents) and to ensure proper examination conditions, adequate (analgo-)sedation or general anesthesia is usually required for the appropriate management of diagnostic procedures in childhood, whether painful or not. The safety of young patients is the first priority. Administrations, hospitals, and ...
