Vasovagal syncope triggered by recent moderate weight loss?
CONCLUSIONS: Some patients have onset of VVS within a few months of weight loss resulting in earlier presentation to clinic. The physiological mechanism for this is uncertain.PMID:35834829

Introduction Hyperthyroidism is a common condition affecting up to 3% of the UK population. Treatment improves symptoms and reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation and stroke that contribute to increased mortality. The most common symptom is weight loss, which is reversed during treatment. Progressive ataxia and cognitive decline in a 67-year-old male: a diagnostic challenge.
We report the case of a 67-year-old male who presented with a six-week history of progressive unsteadiness, cognitive impairment and weight loss, in the context of a recent bereavement. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed several weeks earlier excluded acute stroke. Examination revealed gross bilateral ataxia, bradyphrenia and physical manifestations of depression. Collateral history suggested rapidly progressing symptoms over three months. We present a possibly underappreciated cause which usually responds well to treatment; left untreated it may have a severe course. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his fifties with known coronary and cerebrovascular disease was admitted for watery diarrhoea. Prerenal kidney failure occurred on the same day as the initial colonoscopy. The next day he suffered a stroke. He was anticoagulated and recovered within days.
