Efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of urinary incontinence after prostate surgery: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common complication after prostate surgery. Acupuncture treatment (AT) has been proposed as an alternative therapy for this condition. The purpose of this protocol aims to outline a systematic review and meta-analysis that aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of AT in patients with postprostate surgery UI. Methods We will search for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang database, SinoMed and VIP database. Additionally, we will search two clinical t...

Non-pharmaceutical interventions in complementary and alternative medicine for insomnia in breast cancer survivors: a protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis
Introduction Insomnia has a high incidence in patients with breast cancer, which not only affects the quality of life of patients, but also affects the efficiency of later treatment and rehabilitation. Although the sedative and hypnotic drugs commonly used in clinical practice have a rapid onset of action, they are also accompanied by different degrees of sequelae, withdrawal effects and dependence and addiction. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or complementary and integrative medicine, complementary integrative therapies, including natural nutritional supplement therapy, psychotherapy, physical and mental exe...

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among pregnant women in Nigeria: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions While robust national prevalence studies are sparse in Nigeria, our findings suggest 7 in every 100 pregnant women are likely to have HIV infection. These figures are consistent with reported prevalence rates in sub-Saharan African region. WHO has indicated much higher prevalence in Nigeria compared with our findings. This discrepancy could potentially be attributed to varied methodological approaches and regional focus of studies included in our review. The magnitude of the issue highlights the need for targeted efforts from local, national and international stakeholders for prevention, diagnosis, management and treatment.

Examining the evidence on complementary and alternative therapies to treat peripartum depression in pregnant or postpartum women: study protocol for an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses
Introduction Complementary and alternative therapies (CATs) refer to a diverse range of approaches that can be used as add-on or an alternative to conventional therapies. While a number of individual studies and systematic reviews (SRs) or meta-analyses (MAs) have investigated the effectiveness of specific types of CATs to treat depressive symptoms at specific moments of the perinatal period, an overarching synthesis of the literature is currently lacking. We will conduct an umbrella review of SRs and MAs to assess to which extent CATs are associated with depressive symptoms reduction during pregnancy or after childbirth. ...

Appraising the safety and reporting quality of thread-embedding acupuncture: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction Thread-embedding acupuncture (TEA) is a special type of acupuncture treatment in which medical threads are inserted into subcutaneous tissues or muscles at therapeutic points. TEA is a medical practice that combines acupuncture and medical threads. As such, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of TEA. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the safety of TEA and reporting quality of studies regarding TEA. Methods and analysis The systematic review will be conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook for Systemati...

Flavonoids for viral acute respiratory tract infections: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Introduction Herbal and ‘natural’ products are a growing industry in today’s society because they reportedly help with numerous diseases and ailments. To date, there are some randomised controlled trials (RCTs) conducted on patients concerning the efficacy of flavonoids against viral acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) showing inconsistent results. On this basis, we will summarise the available evidence to investigate the efficacy of flavonoids on viral ARTI by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods and analysis This protocol has been registered. The systematic review and meta-ana...

International prevalence of consultation with a naturopathic practitioner: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions There are up to sixfold differences in the prevalence of naturopathy consults over 12 months between and within world regions, which may be driven by a range of policy, legislative and social factors. PROSPERO registration number CRD42020145529.

Efficacy and safety of osteopathic manipulative treatment: an overview of systematic reviews
Conclusion Based on the currently available SRs and MAs, promising evidence suggests the possible effectiveness of OMT for musculoskeletal disorders. Limited and inconclusive evidence occurs for paediatric conditions, primary headache and IBS. Further well-conducted SRs and MAs are needed to confirm and extend the efficacy and safety of OMT.

Context, classification and study methodologies in research into nature-based therapies: protocol for a scoping review
Introduction Nature provides an array of health benefits, and recent decades have seen a resurgence in nature-based interventions (NBI). While NBI have shown promise in addressing health needs, the wide variety of intervention approaches create difficulty in understanding the efficacy of NBI as a whole. This scoping review will (1) identify the different nomenclature used to define NBI, (2) describe the interventions used and the contexts in which they occurred and (3) describe the methodologies and measurement tools used in NBI studies. Methods and analysis Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews a...

Use of infrared thermography in medical diagnostics: a scoping review protocol
Introduction Thermography offers a non-invasive radiation-free methodology for diagnostic imaging and temperature measurement, but the extent of the current application is unclear, as is the level of evidence for each use case. Moreover, population-based thermographic reference values for diagnostic purposes are nearly unknown. The aim of this scoping review is to identify patient populations and diseases in which thermography is applied, cataloguing of technical and environmental modalities, investigation of the existence of specific reference data and finally exploration of gaps and future tasks. Methods and analysis Pu...

Effectiveness and safety of bee venom pharmacopuncture for rheumatoid arthritis: a systematic review protocol
Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the common autoimmune disease with low quality of life. The representative treatment is medication and medication usage has improved through update of clinical guidelines, however, there are still limitations. Bee venom (BV) has been reported to have meaningful therapeutic effects and the possibility of alternative options for RA through several types of studies, but there is no well-organised and recent published systematic review (SR). Methods We will search randomised controlled trials about the BV on RA from the inception to 31 May 2022 in various databases, manual research an...

Strengthening the quality of clinical trials of acupuncture: a guideline protocol
Introduction Acupuncture has been accepted in many Western countries and clinical trials have been increasing recently. However, the problems of insufficient and low-quality evidence remain, and substantially hinder the development of acupuncture clinical trials. We therefore aim to develop a guideline to strengthen the quality of acupuncture clinical trials, in accordance with WHO handbook for guideline development and the Reporting Items for practice Guidelines in HealThcare. The guideline will help to improve the quality of acupuncture clinical trials. Methods and analysis We will search for studies on the quality of a...
