Cardioembolic stroke as consequence of myocardial infarction: Case report and concise review
Publication date: Available online 11 August 2018Source: Cor et VasaAuthor(s): Ondřej Černý, Tomáš Roubíček, Jindřich Kupec, Rostislav PolášekAbstractDespite tremendous achievements in myocardial infarction therapy, thromboembolic complications remain very serious and its prognosis often fatal. Postinfarction cardioembolic stroke is the most frequent and has the highest mortality of all ischemic stroke subtypes. In this case report we describe cardioembolic stroke from postinfarction apical left ventricular aneurysm as a first symptom of myocardial infarction. In brief literature overview we discuss main risk fac...

Low cardiovascular event rate and high atrial fibrillation recurrence rate one year after electrical cardioversion
ConclusionsCardiovascular event rate one year after electrical cardioversion was low. Electrical cardioversion had a high immediate success rate, however, maintenance of stable sinus rhythm in the long term was low.

Listerial myocarditis as a complication of Listerial meningoencephalitis
Publication date: June 2018Source: Cor et Vasa, Volume 60, Issue 3Author(s): M. Strnadel, T. Hnátek, R. Havlíček, E. Krčová, M. Malý, M. ZavoralAbstractHere, we present a case report of a 53-year-old patient who was admitted for an acute ischaemic stroke. During the hospitalization period, the patient developed meningoencephalitis and acute myocarditis with recurrent episodes of ventricular fibrillation that required defibrillation repeatedly. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from blood culture samples. The patient was treated with antibiotic therapy and showed a good clinical response. The diagnosis of myocarditi...

Role of echocardiography and cardiac biomarkers in prediction of in-hospital mortality and long-term risk of brain infarction in pulmonary embolism patients
ConclusionsHigh blood troponin T, NT-proBNP, RV dilatation/systolic dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension predicted in-hospital mortality. PFO/RLS presence and ST were predictors of clinically apparent/silent brain infarction.

Carotid endarterectomy during the acute period of ischemic stroke
ConclusionsUrgent CEA is indicated in patients with unstable neurological symptoms as well as for those with unstable atherosclerotic plaques. Considering a high risk of stroke recurrence within the first 14 days urgent CEA is effective in the prevention of recurrent stroke. Only 2.2% patients developed postoperatively stroke.

Inappropriate left ventricular hypertrophy as a tool for risk stratification in patients with essential hypertension
Publication date: April 2018Source: Cor et Vasa, Volume 60, Issue 2Author(s): Sergiy LozinskyAbstractThe alternative method of appropriate left ventricular mass prediction in subjects with normal BP and arterial hypertension was proposed. Also the associations of new indicator of LVM inappropriateness with myocardial infarction, stroke and persistent atrial fibrillation were studied. The study consisted of 2 stages. On the first stage 630 untreated hypertensive patients and 206 normotensive persons were studied using methods of office blood pressure (OBP) measurement, echocardiography (ECG), ambulatory blood pressure monito...

Prognostic value of cystatin C in relation to other markers of renal function in early prediction of hospital mortality and major cardiac adverse events in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention
ConclusionsCystatin C is a predictor of early outcome comparable with the GRACE score in patients with STEMI.

Panvascular disease – Diagnosis and management
Publication date: Available online 15 February 2018 Source:Cor et Vasa Author(s): Katerina K. Naka, Victor Aboyans, Charalambos Vlachopoulos Panvascular disease (PVD) increases significantly the risk for cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular death); the more sites affected, the greater the risk of a major cardiac event. Despite its high incidence and severe cardiovascular prognosis, PVD has still not been well studied. History of risk factors and co-morbidities, as well as a detailed physical examination, are mandatory in the initial screening and diagnostic work-up. The ankle-brachial in...
