A Case of McLeod's Syndrome Presenting with Severe Decompensated Heart Failure
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2023 Sep 14;19(1):75-78. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1164. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMcLeod's syndrome (MLS) is an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the XK gene with neurological manifestations as well as cardiomyopathy. This is a case of acute exacerbation of heart failure in a 44-year-old White male with a confirmed diagnosis of MLS, which was managed with guideline-directed medical therapy and placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator with recovery in ejection fraction.PMID:37720304 | PMC:PMC10503528 | DOI:10.14797/mdcvj.1164

Think Outside the Heart: An Unusual Cause of Large Hemopericardium
We describe a 66-year-old male found to have a large bloody pericardial effusion causing tamponade physiology, and multimodality imaging was consistent with intrapericardial malignancy with no identifiable primary source. He was subsequently diagnosed with type B3 thymoma after mediastinal resection.PMID:37694169 | PMC:PMC10487124 | DOI:10.14797/mdcvj.1276

Left Atrial Thrombus in the Setting of Mitral Stenosis
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2023 Aug 24;19(1):61-63. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1272. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTA 56-year-old man with no significant past medical history presented with exertional shortness of breath. Echocardiogram, cardiac magnetic resonance, and computed tomography showed mitral stenosis and a left atrial thrombus. Left atrial thrombus formation is a well-known complication of severe mitral stenosis that can lead to systemic thromboembolism. The patient underwent mitral valve replacement, left atrial thrombus resection, and left atrial appendage closure that resulted in significant improvement in breathing....

Fungal Endocarditis: A Rare Cause of Left Ventricular Outflow Obstruction
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2023 Aug 25;19(1):64-68. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1241. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTA 53-year-old male presented with worsening fever, chest pain, and dyspnea during the past 2 weeks. He was hypoxic, tachycardic, and hypotensive on admission. Labs were notable for high-sensitivity troponin of 657 pg/mL and B-type natriuretic peptide of 1,648 pg/mL. Chest imaging was consistent with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed an ejection fraction of 30% to 35% and a mobile 1.5 cm x 1.6 cm hyperechoic mass on the ventricular surface of the aortic valve (AV) with left v...
