Control of main risk factors after ischaemic stroke across Europe: data from the stroke-specific module of the EUROASPIRE III survey
Conclusion The EUROASPIRE III stroke-specific module shows that secondary prevention and risk factor control in patients after ischaemic stroke need to be improved in four European centres at the time of the study since about half of patients are not achieving risk factor targets defined in European guidelines.

Clinical usefulness of carotid ultrasound to improve stroke risk assessment: ten-year results from the Carotid Atherosclerosis Progression Study (CAPS)
Conclusions: When carotid ultrasound is not restricted to the common carotid artery but includes the internal carotid segments, the inclusion of ultrasound data into stroke risk models may improve the risk classification of individuals. Further validation in primary prevention cohorts is warranted.

Depressive disorder, coronary heart disease, and stroke: dose-response and reverse causation effects in the Whitehall II cohort study
Conclusions There was evidence of a dose–response effect of depressive symptoms on risk of coronary heart disease. In contrast, prospective associations of depressive symptoms with stroke appeared to arise wholly or partly through reverse causation.

European Primary Care Cardiovascular Society (EPCCS) consensus guidance on stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (SPAF) in primary care
Conclusions Atrial fibrillation-related stroke is a major public health priority for most health systems. This practical guidance can assist generalist community physicians to translate the large evidence base for this cause of preventable stroke and implement this at a local level.

Lifestyle interventions for secondary disease prevention in stroke and transient ischaemic attack: a systematic review
Conclusions There is currently insufficient high quality research to support lifestyle interventions post-stroke or TIA on mortality, CVD event rates and cardio-metabolic risk factor profiles. Promising blood pressure reductions were noted in multimodal interventions which addressed lifestyle.

Long term risk factors for coronary heart disease and stroke: influence of duration of follow-up over four decades of mortality surveillance
Conclusion Despite a general diminution in the strength of effect over time, even in the fourth decade of follow-up, classic risk factors retained some predictive capacity for coronary heart disease and, to a lesser degree, stroke.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of different systolic blood pressure targets for people with a history of stroke or transient ischaemic attack: Economic analysis of the PAST-BP study
Conclusion Aiming for a systolic blood pressure target of <130 mmHg or lower is cost effective in people who have had a stroke/transient ischaemic attack in the community, but it is difficult to separate out the impact of the lower target from the impact of more active management of blood pressure.

Cost-effectiveness of apixaban compared to warfarin in the management of atrial fibrillation in Australia
Conclusion Compared to warfarin, apixaban is likely to represent a cost-effective means of preventing stroke-related morbidity and mortality in patients with AF.

Socioeconomic factors and use of secondary preventive therapies for cardiovascular diseases in South Asia: The PURE study
Conclusion The use of secondary preventive drug therapies in patients with known CHD or stroke in South Asia is low with over 80% receiving none of the effective drug treatments. Low household wealth is the most important determinant.

Dyslipidaemia in patients with established cardiovascular disease in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Dyslipidaemia has been recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Our objectives were to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to determine the prevalence of dyslipidaemia among hospitalized adult patients with cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa and to compare between the various cardiovascular disease types. We searched Internet-based search tools and other sources for studies on dyslipidaemia or hypercholesterolaemia among hospitalized adult patients with established cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa, from 1985 to May 2011. Established cardiovascular d...

Cardiovascular disease risk in women with premature ovarian insufficiency: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion POI is an independent though modest risk factor of IHD and overall CVD but not of stroke. Because of the limited impact of POI on CVD risk compared to classical cardiovascular risk factors, it is unlikely that POI will be implemented as modifier of cardiovascular risk classification.

Cardiovascular disease risk in women with a history of spontaneous preterm delivery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion Spontaneous preterm delivery is an independent risk factor for the development of IHD, stroke and overall CVD.

Use of smokeless tobacco and risk of cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion An association was found between ever use of ST and risk of fatal IHD and stroke, consistent with previous reviews. ST consumption also appears to significantly increase risk of non-fatal IHD among users in Asia, but not in Europe.

Cardiovascular events in acute coronary syndrome patients with peripheral arterial disease treated with ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel: Data from the PLATO Trial
Conclusion PAD patients have a high rate of ischaemic and bleeding events post ACS. The reduction of CV death, MI or stroke with ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel in PAD patients was consistent with the overall trial result although it did not reach statistical significance. Overall major bleeding was similar between the therapies.

Common carotid artery end-diastolic velocity is independently associated with future cardiovascular events
Conclusions Low common carotid EDV and PSV were independently associated with future CVD, and EDV improved the prediction of future CVD. More prospective studies are required in different ethnic groups to understand the significance and implication of these findings.
