Conventional versus rapid-deployment aortic valve replacement: a single-centre comparison between the Edwards Magna valve and its rapid-deployment successor
CONCLUSIONS We conclude that this rapid-deployment valve probably facilitates minimally invasive surgery. Furthermore, a subgroup analysis showed reduced transvalvular gradients in smaller valve sizes compared with the conventionally implanted valve of the same type. The favourable haemodynamic profile and the potentially different spectrum of valve-related adverse events should be addressed in further clinical trials.

Full sternotomy versus right anterior minithoracotomy for isolated aortic valve replacement in octogenarians: a propensity-matched study
CONCLUSIONS Minimally invasive AVR through right anterior minithoracotomy can be safely performed in patients aged ≥80 years with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. It is an expeditious and effective alternative to full sternotomy AVR and might be associated with lower postoperative stroke incidence, earlier extubation and shorter hospital stay.

Post-heart transplantation outcome of HeartMate II-bridged recipients requiring unplanned concomitant temporary right ventricular mechanical support
CONCLUSIONS Our data demonstrate that heart transplant recipients who required unplanned RV mechanical support after LVAD implantation achieved comparable rates of early graft loss, post-transplant renal failure and stroke rate in comparison with patients bridged with an isolated HeartMate II assist device. Three-year graft survival was equivalent between those two groups. Given the small sample size, further studies involving more patients are needed to support or challenge our conclusions.

Characterization of dysfunctional remote myocardium in left ventricular anterior aneurysms and improvements following surgical ventricular restoration using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: preliminary results
CONCLUSIONS In patients with chronic ischaemic heart disease with LV aneurysms/large areas of scar, improvements in the remote myocardial MMV and WT underline LV systolic function improvements after SVR. The persistence of myocardial WT in early diastole is the likely mechanism for incomplete or absence of relief of LV diastolic dysfunction by SVR.

The question addressed was ‘is a minimally invasive approach for resection of benign cardiac masses superior to standard full sternotomy?’ A total of 50 papers were found using the reported search, of which, 11 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question.
