Conclusions: Air embolism leading to devastating stroke may occur few hours after laser treatment of varicose veins. Chest symptoms associated with the procedure should raise the possibility of air embolism. An Unusual Cause of Altered Mental Status: Recurrent Cerebral Air Embolism from Atrial-Esophageal Fistula (P2.119)
Conclusion:The incidence of stroke secondary to air emboli is rare but a known complication of AEF's. Review of literature showed no reports of recurrent air embolism following successful treatment with HBO and repair of AEF. CONCLUSIONCO poisoning should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients found to have isolated bilateral thalamic involvement. MR imaging undertaken in acute setting aids in management and prognosis.
