Global stroke statistics
In many countries, stroke is a lower priority than other diseases despite its public health impact. One issue is a lack of readily accessible comparative data to help make the case for the development of national stroke strategies. To assist in this process, we need to have a common repository of the latest published information on the impact of stroke worldwide. We aim to provide a repository of the most current incidence and mortality data on stroke available by country and illustrate the gaps in these data. We plan to update this repository annually and expand the scope to address other aspects of the burden of stroke. ...

Evaluation of the Post Stroke Checklist: a pilot study in the United Kingdom and Singapore
ConclusionsThe findings suggest that the Post Stroke Checklist is a feasible and useful measure for identifying long term stroke care needs in a clinical practice setting. Pilot testing indicated that the Post Stroke Checklist is able to identify a wide range of unmet needs, and patient and clinician feedback indicated a high level of satisfaction with the Post Stroke Checklist assessment. The items were generally well understood and considered relevant to stroke survivors, indicating the Post Stroke Checklist is a feasible, useful, and relevant measure of poststroke care.

Types of stroke recurrence in patients with ischemic stroke: A substudy from the PRoFESS trial
ConclusionsRisk predictors for stroke recurrence and for brain hemorrhage differ by index ischemic stroke subtype, information that is important when initiating secondary prevention therapy.

Stroke unit care and trends of in‐hospital mortality for stroke in Germany 2005–2010
ConclusionsThe earlier stroke unit implementations might represent rather ‘formal’ inceptions in experienced hospitals with preexisting appropriate stroke care, whereas late implementations seem to have caused extra improvements. Overall, stroke patients are more likely to survive when admitted to an stroke unit‐providing hospital. A more stringent assignment of acute stroke patients to stroke unit‐providing hospitals could possibly further reduce stroke mortality in Germany.

Health service management study for stroke: A randomized controlled trial to evaluate two models of stroke care
ConclusionThis proof‐of‐concept study has shown that co‐located acute/rehabilitation stroke care was just as effective as traditionally separated acute/rehabilitation stroke care as reflected in functional independence measure scores, but significantly more efficient as shown in greater functional independence measure efficiency. Co‐located acute/rehabilitation stroke care has potential for significantly improved hospital bed utilization with no patient disadvantage.

Association of baseline dyslipidemia with stroke recurrence within five‐years after ischemic stroke
ConclusionsOur results showed that DL is related to the recurrent strokes in patients with ischemic stroke within five‐years after ischemic stroke, specifically to the large‐artery disease subtype.

World Stroke Organization Global Stroke Services Guidelines and Action Plan
Every two seconds, someone across the globe suffers a symptomatic stroke. ‘Silent’ cerebrovascular disease insidiously contributes to worldwide disability by causing cognitive impairment in the elderly. The risk of cerebrovascular disease is disproportionately higher in low to middle income countries where there may be barriers to stroke care. The last two decades have seen a major transformation in the stroke field with the emergence of evidence‐based approaches to stroke prevention, acute stroke management, and stroke recovery. The current challenge lies in implementing these interventions, particularly in regions ...

The Stroke RiskometerTM App: Validation of a data collection tool and stroke risk predictor
ConclusionsThe Stroke RiskometerTM is comparable in performance for stroke prediction with FSRS and QStroke. All three algorithms performed equally poorly in predicting stroke events. The Stroke RiskometerTM will be continually developed and validated to address the need to improve the current stroke risk scoring systems to more accurately predict stroke, particularly by identifying robust ethnic/race ethnicity group and country specific risk factors.

Posterior circulation stroke is associated with prolonged door‐to‐needle time
ConclusionsPosterior circulation stroke patients had a delay in neurology evaluation after initial emergency department evaluation and a delay in intravenous tissue plasminogen activator administration compared with anterior circulation stroke patients. There may be difficulties in rapidly recognizing the symptoms of posterior circulation stroke, in contrast to anterior circulation stroke, in the emergency department.

Past, present, and future of stroke in middle‐income countries: the Brazilian experience
ConclusionsThe evolution of stroke care in Brazil over the last decade is a pathway that exemplifies the challenges that middle‐income countries have to face in order to improve stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. The reported Brazilian experience can be extrapolated to understand the past, present, and future of stroke care in middle‐income countries.

Socioeconomic disparities in stroke case fatality – Observations from Riks‐Stroke, the Swedish stroke register
ConclusionsSocioeconomic status had only a limited effect on acute phase case fatality, indicating minor disparities in acute stroke treatment. The survival inequality, present already in the subacute phase, increased markedly over time since the stroke event. The socioeconomic differences could not be explained by differences in secondary prevention at discharge from hospital. Large socioeconomic differences in long‐term survival after stroke may exist also in a country with limited income inequity.

Trimming the fat in acute ischemic stroke: an assessment of 24‐h CT scans in tPA patients
ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that routine 24‐h computed tomography scan in patients without 24‐h National Institute of Health Stroke Scale worsening (especially those with baseline National Institute of Health Stroke Scale ≤10) is less likely to yield information that results in a deviation from standard acute stroke care. No patient without worsening and baseline National Institute of Health Stroke Scale ≤10 had parenchymal hematoma on 24‐h computed tomography. Application of the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale to distinguish patients who should have 24‐h follow‐up imaging from those who will...

Association between atherogenic dyslipidemia and recurrent stroke risk in patients with different subtypes of ischemic stroke
ConclusionsAtherogenic dyslipidemia is associated with higher risk of stroke recurrence in ischemic stroke patients. Such association might be more pronounced in large‐artery atherosclerosis subtype and needs further investigation to establish such relationship.

Risk factors for ischemic stroke and its subtypes in Chinese vs. Caucasians: Systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionOur study showed a lower prevalence of atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease and hypercholesterolemia in Chinese, and mostly similar risk factor associations in Chinese and Caucasian ischemic stroke patients. Further analyses of individual patient data to allow adjustment for confounders are needed to confirm and extend these findings.
