Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia and it is associated with systemic thromboembolism. Until recently, vitamin K antagonists (VKA) such as warfarin were the only available oral anticoagulant therapy for prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in AF.
