Electrocardiographic markers of incident atrial fibrillation in patients with cryptogenic stroke
Conclusion: PWD and P-wave axis predicted incident AF in this subset of pts with cryptogenic stroke. The ECG may be a toll to identify pts at risk of developing AF, although larger studies are needed to confirm these results. Abstract Figure.

Smartphone electrocardiogram for detecting atrial fibrillation after a cerebral ischaemic event: a multicentre randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsAmong patients ≥55 years of age with a recent cryptogenic stroke or TIA, 30-day smartphone ECG recording significantly improved the detection of AF when compared with the standard repeat 24-h Holter monitoring.

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the Italian elderly population and projections from 2020 to 2060 for Italy and the European Union: the FAI Project
ConclusionsOur findings indicate a high burden of AF in coming decades, especially among the oldest-old, who carry the higher AF-related risk of stroke and medical complications.

87 Clinical evaluation of the ‘pulse smart rhythm analyst’: a novel software algorithm and pulse oximeter combination for mass screening of atrial fibrillation
Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, with a prevalence of 1-2% in the general population. Screening for and anticoagulating patients with asymptomatic AF may prove an additional opportunity to prevent stroke, heart failure and premature death in the general population. However, screening programmes to detect asymptomatic AF have not been undertaken; in part due to the prohibitive logistics and cost effectiveness of 12-lead ECGs and clinicians able to interpret them. We designed and evaluated a practical and scalable technology to address this.

Dabigatran vs. warfarin in relation to the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with atrial fibrillation — the Randomized Evaluation of Long-term anticoagulation therapY (RE-LY) study
ConclusionsLVH was associated with a lower antithrombotic efficacy of warfarin, but not of dabigatran, in patients with AF. Consequently, the relative benefit of the lower dose of dabigatran compared to warfarin was enhanced in patients with LVH. The higher dose of dabigatran was superior to warfarin regardless of LVH status.Clinical trial registrationhttp:www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00262600.

Cardiac arrhythmias in patients with Danon disease
ConclusionsThe present study indicates that the distinct surface ECG pattern in Danon disease is not associated with ventricular pre-excitation. Atrial fibrillation is frequently observed in these patients and may be associated with thromboembolic events in the young, while sustained ventricular arrhythmias occur less frequently than previously reported.

Cost-effectiveness of screening for atrial fibrillation in primary care with a handheld, single-lead electrocardiogram device in the Netherlands
ConclusionScreening for AF in primary care with a handheld, single-lead ECG during seasonal influenza vaccination is very likely to be cost saving for identifying new cases of AF in the Dutch population aged 65 years and over. Active screening for AF with a single-lead, handheld ECG device during seasonal influenza vaccination could be implemented in primary care.

Safe automatic one-lead electrocardiogram analysis in screening for atrial fibrillation
ConclusionAutomatic ECG screening using a computerized algorithm safely identifies normal ECGs in Lead I and reduces the need for manual evaluation of individual ECGs with>85% with 100% sensitivity on an individual basis.

Interrelationship between electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, QT prolongation, and ischaemic stroke: the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study
Conclusion The combination of ECG-LVH and prolonged QT is associated with a higher risk of ischaemic stroke compared with either condition in isolation, and the stroke risk for each condition does not depend on the presence of the other.

Ambulatory cardiac arrhythmias in relation to mild hypokalaemia and prognosis in community dwelling middle-aged and elderly subjects
Conclusion In middle-aged and elderly subjects with no manifest heart disease, mild hypokalaemia is associated with increased rate of ventricular but not supraventricular arrhythmias. Hypokalaemia interacts synergistically with increased ventricular ectopy to increase the risk of adverse events.

Performance of handheld electrocardiogram devices to detect atrial fibrillation in a cardiology and geriatric ward setting
Conclusion</div>Using AliveCor or MyDiagnostick handheld recorders requires a structured screening strategy to be effective and cost-effective in a hospital setting. It must exclude patients with implanted devices and known AF, and requires targeted additional 12-lead ECGs to optimize specificity. Under these circumstances, the expenses per diagnosed new AF patient and preventable stroke are reasonable.</span>

A cost-effectiveness analysis of screening for silent atrial fibrillation after ischaemic stroke
Conclusion Screening of silent AF by intermittent ECG recordings in patients with a recent ischaemic stroke is a cost-effective use of health care resources saving costs and lives and improving the quality of life.

Atrial fibrillation in patients with ischaemic stroke in the Swedish national patient registers: how much do we miss?
Conclusion Despite the high specificity, AF diagnosis in the Swedish Patient Register assessed in the population of ischaemic stroke patients and age- and gender-matched control subjects has modest sensitivity, which may result in underestimating prevalent and incident AF cases if only register data are used for identification of subjects with AF in epidemiology studies.
