Stability of Diagnoses of Cognitive Impairment, Not Dementia in a Veterans Affairs Primary Care Population
ConclusionA minority of subjects had worsening of cognitive function sufficient to change diagnostic category. Over an average of 2.5 years, subjects diagnosed with CIND at baseline reverted to normal cognition at a higher rate than progressed to dementia. Cognitive screening tests addressing multiple domains of cognitive impairment were predictive of cognitive decline.

Association Between Glycosylated Hemoglobin and Cardiovascular Events and Mortality in Older Adults without Diabetes Mellitus in the General Population: The Leiden 85‐Plus Study
ConclusionIn individuals aged 85 and older without diabetes mellitus, higher HbA1c is associated with greater risk of MI but not with stroke and mortality.

Depression, Vascular Factors, and Risk of Dementia in Primary Care: A Retrospective Cohort Study
ConclusionDepression in later life increases the risk of dementia. The effect is particularly high in individuals with depression and vascular disorders. Targeting late‐onset depression in individuals with vascular disorders might lower dementia risk by preventing cerebrovascular changes.

Can Blood Pressure Be Lowered Safely in Older Adults with Lacunar Stroke? The Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes Study Experience
ConclusionExcept for unsteadiness when standing, there was no difference according to age in individuals with lacunar stroke with respect to side effects potentially related to lowering blood pressure. Although the lower SBP target was not associated with lower likelihood of recurrent stroke, these exploratory analyses suggested a possible benefit related to vascular death.

Total and Differential White Blood Cell Counts in Late Life Predict 8‐Year Incident Stroke: The Honolulu Heart Program
ConclusionIn elderly Japanese‐American men, higher total WBC and neutrophil counts were independent predictors of overall stroke, as well as thromboembolic stroke.

Underuse of Oral Anticoagulation for Individuals with Atrial Fibrillation in a Nursing Home Setting in France: Comparisons of Resident Characteristics and Physician Attitude
ConclusionThe prevalence of AF in a cohort of very old nursing home residents was 10%. Anticoagulation was prescribed in fewer than 50% of eligible cases despite high individual risk of stroke. Geriatric syndromes, especially falls and cognitive disorders, were the main reported contraindications for prescribing anticoagulants. Physicians caring for those residents wrongly thought that paroxysmal AF caused fewer thromboembolic events than permanent AF, which explains lower rates of anticoagulant prescription in individuals with paroxysmal AF.

Associations Between Oral Health and Risk of Dementia in a 37‐Year Follow‐Up Study: The Prospective Population Study of Women in Gothenburg
ConclusionIn most of the analyses, lower tooth count was not associated with dementia, although a significant association was found for one of the three examinations. Further research may benefit from more‐direct measures of dental and periodontal disease.

Cognitive Function in the Prefrailty and Frailty Syndrome
ConclusionCognitive function is worse across multiple cognitive domains in prefrail and frail individuals aged 50 and older than in those who are robust, although the absolute differences are small after adjusting for confounding factors.

Brain Imaging Findings in Elderly Adults and Years of Life, Healthy Life, and Able Life over the Ensuing 16 Years: The Cardiovascular Health Study
ConclusionFindings on MRI scans in elderly adults are associated not only with long‐term survival, but also with long‐term self‐rated health and limitation in ADLs. The combination of infarcts and leukoaraiosis carried the worst prognosis, presumably reflecting small vessel disease.

Greater Daily Defined Dose of Antihypertensive Medication Increases the Risk of Falls in Older People—A Population‐Based Study
ConclusionHigher dose of antihypertensive medication is independently associated with falls in older people, particularly in those with a history of previous stroke, and with more than three standard units conferring the highest risk.
