Influence of Competing Risks on Estimating the Expected Benefit of Warfarin in Individuals with Atrial Fibrillation Not Currently Taking Anticoagulants: The Anticoagulation and Risk Factors in Atrial Fibrillation Study
ConclusionAnalyses accounting for competing death events may provide a more‐realistic estimate of the longer‐term stroke prevention benefits of anticoagulants than traditional noncompeting risk analyses for individuals with AF, particularly those who are not currently treated with anticoagulants.

Knowledge Gaps in Cardiovascular Care of Older Adults: A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and American Geriatrics Society: Executive Summary
The objectives of this scientific statement are to summarize current guideline recommendations as they apply to older adults, identify critical gaps in knowledge that preclude informed evidence‐based decision‐making, and recommend future research to close existing knowledge gaps. To achieve these objectives, a detailed review was conducted of current American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) guidelines to identify content and recommendations that explicitly targeted older adults. A pervasive lack of evidence to guide clinical decision‐making in older adu...

Pain Treatment of Underserved Older African Americans
This study examined patterns and correlates of pain medication use: severity of pain, medical conditions, and access to care. African Americans aged 65 and older were recruited from 16 churches located in south Los Angeles (N = 400). Structured face‐to‐face interviews and visual inspection of each participant's medications were conducted. More than 39% of participants were aged 75 and older, and 65% were female. Forty‐seven percent used at least one type of pain medication. The frequency of pain medication use according to pharmaceutical class was nonopioid, 33%; opioid, 12%; adjuvant, 9%; and other drug, 8%. Seventy...

Compression of Morbidity Is Observed Across Cohorts with Exceptional Longevity
ConclusionThe similar extension of health span and compression of morbidity seen in NECS and LGP participants with exceptional longevity further validates the utility of these rare individuals for the study of factors that delay or prevent a broad spectrum of diseases otherwise associated with mortality and disability.

Self ‐Reported Napping Behavior Change After Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Treatment in Older Adults with Obstructive Sleep Apnea
ConclusionLong‐term CPAP treatment in older adults with OSAHS can play a significant role in reducing nap frequency and daily nap duration. Aging or shorter baseline daily nap duration may attenuate this effect.

Effects of Different Levels of Caregiver Training on Oral Hygiene After Stroke
ConclusionAdditional assessment of program components is necessary to produce clinically significant outcomes. Caregiver PI and GI scores may serve as objective measures of their oral hygiene skills, which can be improved with comprehensive instructions.

Gait Speed as a Guide for Blood Pressure Targets in Older Adults: A Modeling Study
ConclusionThe most cost‐effective SBP target varies according to history of cardiovascular disease and gait speed in persons aged 60–94. These projections highlight the need for better estimates of the benefits and harms of antihypertensive medications in a diverse group of older adults, because the net benefit is sensitive to the characteristics of the population treated.

Using an Atrial Fibrillation Decision Support Tool for Thromboprophylaxis in Atrial Fibrillation: Effect of Sex and Age
ConclusionPhysicians should understand that female sex is a significant risk factor for AF‐related stroke and incorporate this into decision‐making about thromboprophylaxis. Treating older adults with aspirin instead of OAT exposes them to significant risk of bleeding with little to no reduction in AF‐related stroke risk.

Diabetes Mellitus as a Risk Factor for Development of Depressive Symptoms in a Population‐Based Cohort of Older Mexican Americans
ConclusionDiabetes mellitus increased the risk of developing depressive symptoms in older Mexican Americans. Older Latinos with diabetes mellitus should be screened for depressive symptoms and prioritized for close follow‐up, potentially through greater reliance on team‐based models of care.
