Relationship between carotid arterial properties and cerebral white matter hyperintensities
Conclusions: Large carotid artery diameters are associated with greater burden of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) in this multiethnic population. The association between increased diameters, decreased STRAIN, and greater WMH burden is more pronounced among Hispanics. These associations suggest a potential important pathophysiologic role of extracranial large artery remodeling in the burden of WMH.

Recent Nationwide Trends in Transcranial Doppler Utilization During Acute Ischemic Stroke Hospitalizations (P4.296)
Conclusions:Over the last decade there has been a slight but steady decrease in the use of TCD during AIS hospitalizations in the US. Future studies should examine the cost-utility of TCD, especially with the advent of endovascular stroke treatment systems.Disclosure: Dr. Liu has nothing to disclose. Is there a correlation between embolic strokes of undetermined source (ESUS) and patent foramen ovale (PFO)? - A contrasted Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (cTCD) study. (P6.287)
Conclusions:Massive shunt (the so-called "curtain pattern") during Valsalva maneuver at cTCD was predictive of ESUS in patients with stroke and PFO. The presence of RLS at rest was not statiscally relevant, probably because of the small sample size.Disclosure: Dr. Scavasine has nothing to disclose. Dr. Chamma has nothing to disclose. Patterns of utilization of extracranial neurovascular ultrasound in patients with syncope in the context of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Choosing Wisely initiative. (P2.187)
Conclusions:The clinical value of ENVU in syncope evaluation is not well established. Our study demonstrated a local increase utilization of ENVU despite AAN recommendations. We suspect our observations are not unique to our institution, and encourage colleagues to review the Choosing Wisely campaign in order to implement cost – effective practices in the evaluation of syncope.Study Supported by: n/aDisclosure: Dr. Ortiz-Garcia has nothing to disclose. Reducing Resource Utilization and Improving Efficiency Using A Separate Activation for Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion Ischemic Strokes (P5.264)
Conclusions:Partitioning of the acute stroke management process with a separate activation for probable large vessel occlusions resulted in a reduction of vascular imaging utilization and did not result in slower door-to-groin times.Study Supported by: No funding.Disclosure: Dr. Tan has nothing to disclose. More to Atherosclerosis than Stenosis: Symptomatic Carotid Artery with Intraplaque Hemorrhage (P5.285)
Conclusions:Current guidelines only address the degree of arterial narrowing when recommending carotid revascularization procedures for secondary stroke prevention. The most recent AHA-ASA guideline advises against revascularization procedures in less than 50% CA stenosis. These guidelines do not account for plaque morphology that may predict a high risk of early stroke recurrence as demonstrated by our patient.Disclosure: Dr. Rai has nothing to disclose. LDL and Systolic Blood Pressure Are Associated with Coated-Platelet Levels in Patients with Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis (P1.235)
Conclusions: In asymptomatic patients with carotid atherosclerosis, higher LDL and lower SBP were associated with increased coated-platelet levels. The relationship between LDL and coated-platelet levels is consistent with the recognized role of hypercholesterolemia in cardiovascular disease. The significance of the association between lower SBP and higher coated-platelet levels is less clear. These findings should be confirmed in prospective studies. Degree of Stenosis by Angiography Does Not Influence Risk of Endarterectomy or Stenting in Patients with Severe Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis (P1.236)
Conclusions:This is the largest contemporary study of carotid angiograms performed in 662 patients with severe asymptomatic carotid stenosis. No relationship was detected between severity of stenosis and 30-day stroke and death. The safety of CEA and CAS in asymptomatic patients limits detection of other factors that may increase risk because so few events complicate these procedures.Disclosure: Dr. Brott has received personal compensation for activities with 3D Communications and Edwards Lifesciences as a consultant. Etiologic Epidemiology of Ischemic Stroke (A Study About 2450 Cases) (P1.120)
Conclusions: The main etiology of ischemic stroke in elderly person was lacunar infract followed by atherosclerosis and atrial fibrillation. In Young adults, etiology differs according to country. In our study Carotid dissection takes the first place in patients with age under 45 years old Etiological investigations and a swift implementation of strategy for the prevention of the risk factors are important faced with increased incidence of ischemic stroke. Despite a complete assessment, ischemic stroke etiology can remain indeterminate.Disclosure: Dr. bouzidi has nothing to disclose. Dr. AYADI has nothing to disclose. Dr. ...
