Randomized Evaluation of Carotid Occlusion and Neurocognition (RECON) trial: Main results
Conclusion: Cognitive improvement following bypass surgery was not superior to medical therapy among patients with recently symptomatic carotid occlusion and increased OEF. Among those with no recurrent stroke, less hemodynamic impairment at baseline was associated with greater cognitive gain in both groups. Reversing cognitive impairment in hemodynamic failure remains an open challenge. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class II evidence that for patients with symptomatic ICA occlusion and increased OEF on PET, EC-IC bypass compared to no bypass does not improve cognitive function after 2 years.

Impaired Processing of Positive and Negative Facial Expressions in Right Hemisphere Stroke (P2.159)
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with RH stroke had impaired ability to process facial expressions relative to controls.Patients with lesions in the right amygdala and right anterior insula demonstrated particular difficulty processing specific facial expressions. Burden of Silent Cerebrovascular Disease and Not Acute Infarct Characteristics Determine Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment, Both in Small Vessel and Large Vessel Strokes (P5.222)
CONCLUSIONS:Our results highlight the importance of silent cerebral ischemia as a key determinant of PSCI. Though acute infarct may lead to acute decline in cognition, WMH is the likely factor determining the severity of cognitive impairment. Educational Intervention Reduces Utilization of Low-Value Testing in Cerebrovascular Inpatients: An Example of Rapidly Implementable Quality Improvement (P2.309)
Conclusions: In this prospective quality improvement study, an educational intervention resulted in significant reduction in utilization of low-value tests in patients admitted to an inpatient cerebrovascular service. Primordial Prevention of Stroke: Identifying the Determinants of Hypertension in Urban Uganda (P3.338)

Non-Neurologist Self Assessment of Emergency Neurology Proficiency and Interest in a Novel Intensive Stroke and Neurocritical Care Training Program: The X-CHANGE Program (P1.045)
Conclusions:Hospital based non-neurology physicians have significant exposure to critically ill neurological patients. Many are not comfortable with important fundamental skills, such as the neurological exam. There is strong interest in a proposed intensive training program emphasizing bedside teaching. Teleneurology applications: Report of the Telemedicine Work Group of the American Academy of Neurology
Conclusions: Teleneurology is an effective tool for the rapid evaluation of patients in remote locations requiring neurologic care. These underserved locations include geographically isolated rural areas as well as urban cores with insufficient available neurology specialists. With this technology, neurologists will be better able to meet the burgeoning demand for access to neurologic care in an era of declining availability. An increase in physician awareness and support at the federal and state level is necessary to facilitate expansion of telemedicine into further areas of neurology.

Asian neurology and stroke
In his 2010 inauguration speech, Professor Vladimir Hachinski, President of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), conveyed a message: "Asia has more than 60% of the global population, yet in some areas, the education of neurology to young neurologists does not keep up with the patients' needs of neurologic care." He organized the Asia Initiative as a part of WFN to bring attention to this region. As the Chair of this Initiative, I have met many Asian neurologists and have begun to realize that there is a unique situation that requires attention from the rest of the world.

Public Review: The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD), Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) and Myotonic Dystrophy (DM) Common Data Elements (CDE) Recommendations (S25.004)
CONCLUSIONS: The NINDS encourages the use of the CDEs by the neurological clinical research community in order to standardize the collection of research data across studies. Clinical Reasoning: A 66-year-old man with recurrent multi-territory infarcts
