Long-term disability after lacunar stroke: Secondary prevention of small subcortical strokes
Conclusions: In lacunar stroke patients, older age was associated with worsening long-term disability, even without recurrence. Worse long-term function was associated with diabetes, cognitive status, and prior stroke, and regional differences may be attributable to variations in health care delivery or scale interpretation.

Structural MRI markers of brain aging early after ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Brain structure is likely to be compromised before ischemic stroke by vascular risk factors. Smaller hippocampal and total brain volumes and increased WMH load represent proxies for underlying vascular brain injury.

Awareness of Stroke and Knowledge of its Warning Signs and Risk Factors in a Developing Country (P7.133)
CONCLUSIONS: The study clearly revealed lack of public’s knowledge about stroke, its warning symptoms and risk factors in the community investigated. Improvement in stroke awareness level can be achieved by health education utilizing the media tools preferred by the targeted population. Results of Systemizing Stroke Care in Acute Endovascular Patients (P2.308)
CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of a streamlined routing and transfer process significantly shortened treatment times and decreased complications in our stroke patients. Our pre-established expedited triage, imaging, stroke physician expertise, and mechanical clot retrieval proficiency resulted in more favorable outcomes. With these changes, patients receive the most specialized endovascular care in a highly efficient manner.Disclosure: Dr. Hawkins has nothing to disclose. Dr. Martin has nothing to disclose. Perception Of Stroke Symptoms And Utilization Of Emergency Medical Systems In Argentina (P7.132)
CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest a low level of stroke symptoms awareness in our country even in a population of middle/high socioeconomic level. The role and procedures of EMS in Argentina should be revised as early arrival and treatment appear to be associated with no utilization of them.Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Hawkes has nothing to disclose. Medication Self-Administration after Stroke (P5.181)
Conclusion: Stroke patients performed poorly on the HMS, and though performance improved after medication education, this may be related to spontaneous stroke recovery. Thrombolytic Utilization in Ischemic Stroke Is Significantly Higher in US Hospitals with Neurology Residency Program (S02.006)
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke care at NR hospitals is associated with an increased thrombolytic utilization rate. The increased tPA utilization at NR between 2002-2006 may be related to the rapid increase in Primary Stroke Centers across the country.Disclosure: Dr. Moradiya has nothing to disclose. Peripheral pulse measurement after ischemic stroke: A feasibility study
Conclusion: With a low rate of false-positive results, MPP offers an easy, ubiquitously available, noninvasive, first-step screening tool to guide ECG diagnostics for pAF after ischemic stroke. The data warrant a prospective trial evaluating the efficacy of MPP-guided ECG diagnostics in secondary prevention after stroke, which is now underway. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class I evidence that MPP by patients or relatives accurately distinguishes AF from normal heart rhythm as compared with continuous ECG.

Time is Brain: A Quality Improvement Project to Improve Stroke Outcomes by Educating EMS. (P4.308)
Conclusions: Acute stroke management requires a multidisciplinary team effort involving the EMS and stroke team. Contacting the family is essential to review contraindications in aphasic patients. Educating EMS about acute stroke management can help prevent delays in administrating IV rtPA. At our center we were able to decrease the number of delays by involving and educating the EMS.Disclosure: Dr. Singh has nothing to disclose. Dr. Sofat has nothing to disclose. NIH Stroke Scale Assessment via Tablet-based Mobile Telestroke During Ambulance Transport Is Feasible - pilot data from the Improving Treatment with Rapid Evaluation of Acute stroke via mobile Telemedecine (iTREAT) study (S21.003)
CONCLUSIONS: In this simulation study, NIHSS scores performed during rural ambulance transport using our low-cost, off-the-shelf tablet-based mobile telestroke system correlated well with face-to-face assessments. These results support further prospective research of mobile telemedicine in live patient settings of prehospital stroke care.Disclosure: Dr. Padrick has received research support from the American Heart Association. Suicide in stroke survivors: Frequency and risk factors
Stroke is a substantial health problem worldwide. In addition to the high mortality in the acute phase, stroke causes further mortality over time due to associated comorbidities and complications, including suicidality.1 Stroke survivors have an increased risk of attempted or completed suicide.2 Identified risk factors for suicidality include depression, previous mood disorder, prior history of stroke, younger age, and cognitive impairment.2 Limited data are available on the role of socioeconomic factors such as civil status (most stroke survivors are widows or widowers), education, or income in suicidality. The recognitio...

A rare cause of stroke in young: PHACE syndrome (P1.253)
Conclusions:Neurocutaneous syndromes are typically diagnosed in childhood and can be a rare cause of stroke in young. Our patient suffered an ischemic stroke secondary to sequelae of undiagnosed PHACE syndrome. Early identification of neurocutaneous syndromes allows for proper surveillance, evaluation, and preventative education for development of complications.Disclosure: Dr. Fitzgerald has nothing to disclose. NIHSS Score May Help Predict Health Literacy Levels after Acute Ischemic Stroke (P7.158)
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that there may be an association between the NIHSS score and HL levels in patients hospitalized with AIS. Additional studies incorporating a larger number of patients are warranted to discern if this is a true association. Patient NIHSS score might be a factor healthcare professionals can utilize to help identify hospitalized AIS patients who require intensive stroke risk reduction education.Study Supported by:University of Florida COM - Jacksonville Dean's GrantDisclosure: Dr. Sanders has received personal compensation for activities with Biogen Idec.
