How Well Do Neurology Residents Recognize Neurological Illness? An Analysis of the Close the Loop Resident Clinical Acumen Assessment Project (P4.204)
CONCLUSIONS: This educational initiative further examines diagnostic errors made by neurology residents. When inaccurate, residents tended to over-interpret cases as neurological, and a large percentage of total errors were within the sub-categories of neurological disease. Effect of white matter lesions on manual dexterity in healthy middle-aged persons
Conclusions: Greater WML volumes in different brain regions are associated with higher pegboard scores (worse performance) independent of age, sex, race, education, and total or regional volumes. This suggests that small vessel cerebrovascular disease may be present in healthy individuals in a preclinical state with measurable impact on complex integrative functions in individuals with excess risk of clinical vascular disease.

Effects of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor on White Matter Integrity in Middle-Aged Adults: A Voxel-Based Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study (S39.006)
Conclusions: In our community-based, stroke-free middle-aged sample, elevated BDNF has a subtle, positive effect on WM microstructural integrity in specific tracts whose integrity was also found to be associated with preserved executive function. Residency Training: The role of neurocritical care in resident education
Neurology is traditionally recognized as primarily an outpatient or consultative specialty, usually attracting candidates whose main focus may not necessarily be the management of complex critically ill patients or the performance of invasive procedures. However, the advent of modern mechanical ventilation and, more recently, effective therapies for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and other neurologic catastrophes is bringing about a paradigm shift, with neurologists increasingly assuming a more aggressive attitude and rapid response to frequently disabling and often fatal pathologies.

Frequency of and risk factors for poor cognitive performance in hemodialysis patients
Conclusions: There is a high frequency of poor cognitive performance in hemodialysis patients, primarily affecting executive function. Risk factors for worse executive function include vascular risk factors as well as vascular disease. Normal performance on the MMSE does not preclude impaired cognitive function, because individuals with MMSE score ≥24 also have a high frequency of poor cognitive performance.

Classifying Patients with Spatial Neglect by "Aiming" Versus "Where" Spatial Bias May Explain Differential Response to Bromocriptine Treatment (P03.261)
CONCLUSIONS: Classifying spatial neglect may be vital to interpreting rehabilitation outcomes and treatment studies. In this group study, larger than those performed previously, patients with "aiming" bias appeared to respond favorably to bromocriptine. However, "aiming" neglect patients may also have had milder neglect than those with "where" bias. Therefore, identifying "aiming" bias may also identify milder forms of neglect likely to respond to bromocriptine. How experienced community neurologists make diagnoses during clinical encounters
We describe 3 core domains of diagnosis: 1) clinical (C), 2) laboratory and electrodiagnostics (L), and 3) neuroimaging (N). Neurologists were uniform in their practices across these domains except within the clinical domain, where the physical examination varied considerably among clinicians.
