Challenges and opportunities associated with e-cigarettes in Australia: A qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Despite strong restrictions on e-cigarettes in Australia, experts working in this field reported that these products, and the companies behind them, present several challenges to public health.IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Tighter regulation and increased enforcement are needed to address the challenges posed by e-cigarettes. Controlled access to liquid nicotine under a pharmaceutical model offers an opportunity for smokers to access the behavioural support that may help them to quit while also restricting e-cigarette availability.PMID:36693288 | DOI:10.1016/j.anzjph.2022.100006

"They're sleek, stylish and sexy:" selling e-cigarettes online
CONCLUSIONS: Although e-cigarette regulations are different in Australia and NZ, the online product range, marketing strategies, access and marketing claims were similar and sold e-liquid containing nicotine. The health and cessation e-cigarette marketing claims were outlandish and unsubstantiated.IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Most purchasing of e-cigarettes occurs online. Regulations and enforcement to limit access and stop unsubstantiated marketing claims must be a public health priority.PMID:36641959 | DOI:10.1016/j.anzjph.2022.100013

Vaping product access and use among 14-17-year-olds in New South Wales: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Vaping was the strongest risk factor for smoking, and vice versa, suggesting there is not a straightforward, unidirectional relationship between vaping and smoking in young people. Young people appear to be readily accessing nicotine vaping products, which are often disposable and flavoured, through both social and commercial channels.IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Stronger enforcement of federal and state policies designed to protect young people from vaping products is urgently needed.PMID:36156328 | DOI:10.1111/1753-6405.13316

Challenges and opportunities for tobacco control in Australia: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Several challenges are perceived to be hampering Australia's tobacco control efforts. The attention being devoted to e-cigarettes at the expense of effective control measures warrants immediate addressing.IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: Increasing awareness that smoking continues to be the leading cause of preventable death, developing an evidence-based national cessation strategy and implementing measures that protect tobacco control efforts from vested interests are critical to reducing smoking prevalence rates.PMID:35980209 | DOI:10.1111/1753-6405.13294
