Rivaroxaban for treatment of intraventricular thrombus in Chagas disease
We present a case of a 61-year-old man admitted for stroke 5 months after a renal embolism. An intraventricular thrombus was observed, probably the source of the cerebral and renal embolisms. The patient refused warfarin and rivaroxaban was used instead. After 40 days of treatment the thrombus had dissolved, after 20 months of regular use of rivaroxaban no more embolic events were observed. The use of rivaroxaban was effective in preventing embolic events in Chagas disease and intraventricular thrombus. <Learning objective: Warfarin is recommended for stroke prevention in patients with Chagas disease and left ventri...

Percutaneous isolation of left atrial appendage thrombus
Publication date: Available online 16 June 2017 Source:Journal of Cardiology Cases Author(s): Oh-Hyun Lee, Jae-Sun Uhm, Jung-Sun Kim, In-Jeong Cho, Geu-Ru Hong, Hui-Nam Pak, Yangsoo Jang Most physicians regard left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombus as a contraindication for LAA occlusion due to risk of distal embolization which is a serious complication. Here we report a case of successfully implanted Amplazter cardiac plug without complication in elderly patients having LAA thrombus with recurrent embolic events despite oral anticoagulants for prevention of thromboembolic events. <Learning objective: LAA thrombus is...

Interaction between warfarin and astaxanthin: A case report
This report explains the potential interaction between warfarin and astaxanthin in a 69-year-old Thai woman with history of ischemic stroke. Before taking astaxanthin, the patient used constant doses of warfarin, atenolol, digoxin, aspirin, omeprazole, and simvastatin concomitantly for 17 days without any signs and symptoms of adverse events. One day after astaxanthin was supplemented to her treatment regimen, ecchymosis was found on the right side of her groin and thigh. On the next day, area of ecchymosis was larger. International normalized ratio (INR) values increased from 1.4 to 10.38. Warfarin and astaxanthin were wi...
