Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion in the current practice
Kardiol Pol. 2021 Mar 5. doi: 10.33963/KP.15864. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral anticoagulation (OAC) is the standard of care for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) but is associated with a substantial risk of bleeding complications and is dependent on optimal patient´s compliance. In patients with non-valvular AF, the left atrial appendage is the source of thrombi that may cause stroke in up to 91-95% of cases. Thus, percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is increasingly being performed as an alternative to OAC for stroke prophylaxis in patients at increased bleeding risk. Current evidence sup...

Patients after persistent foramen ovale (PFO) closure: long-term benefits and risks. A contemporary approach to guide clinical decision making
Kardiol Pol. 2021 Feb 17. doi: 10.33963/KP.15817. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatent foramen ovale is a congenital heart disease, which represents 80% of atrial septal defects and consist of a remnant of fetal circulation that functions in post-natal conditions as a transient interatrial right-to-left shunt of variable magnitude. The PFO may be implicated in the pathogenesis of several medical conditions, such as cryptogenic stroke, cryptogenic left circulation thromboembolism, migraine syndromes, decompression sickness. The most frequent indication for PFO closure remains PFO-associated left circulation thromboembolism....

Patients after persistent foramen ovale (PFO) closure: long-term benefits and risks. A contemporary approach to guide clinical decision making.
Abstract Patent foramen ovale is a congenital heart disease, which represents 80% of atrial septal defects and consist of a remnant of fetal circulation that functions in post-natal conditions as a transient interatrial right-to-left shunt of variable magnitude. The PFO may be implicated in the pathogenesis of several medical conditions, such as cryptogenic stroke, cryptogenic left circulation thromboembolism, migraine syndromes, decompression sickness. The most frequent indication for PFO closure remains PFO-associated left circulation thromboembolism. In select patients, PFO closure reduces stroke recurrence in ...

A comparison of clinical characteristics, the in-hospital course, and 12-month prognosis in women and men with chronic coronary syndromes.
Conclusions: Women and men with CCS differ in the incidence of risk factors and revascularization treatments. Men were found to have a higher frequency of 12-month death and composite endpoint follow-up. However, sex is not independent predictor of 12-month outcomes. Predictors of atrial tachyarrhythmias in adults with congenital heart disease.
CONCLUSIONS:  In patients with CHD, the main risk factors for AT are RA dilatation, high subpulmonary ventricular systolic pressure and significant tricuspid regurgitation. The presence of AT may increase the risk of adverse cardiac events. PMID: 33047943 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
