Relationship between admission serum bilirubin and severity of acute ischaemic stroke in a nigerian tertiary hospital (p1.259)
Conclusion:Patients with higher physiologic range of serum bilirubin had more severe stroke (higher NIHSS values), suggesting that higher bilirubin values at stroke onset might be a reflection of oxidative intensity.Disclosure: Dr. Ademiluyi has nothing to disclose. Stroke Risk Factors, Subtypes, and 30-Day Case Fatality in Abuja, Nigeria (P1.121)
CONCLUSIONS: Although hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation were important stroke risk factors, in many patients, these were detected only after a stroke. While the commonest stroke subtype was cerebral infarction, observed in almost two-third of patients, SAH was associated with the highest case-fatality rate at 30 days of 44.4%. Larger population-based studies are planned.Study Supported by: nilDisclosure: Dr. Bwala has nothing to disclose.

Stroke Mortality And Its Predictors In Nigeria: Results Of A Hospital-Based Study (P2.120)
Conclusion: The 30-day case fatality rate among our stroke patients is high while the independent predictors of this outcome are severity of stroke on admission and presence of complications. Continuing health education of the public on stroke recognition and the need for early hospital presentation is necessary while optimal management of cases in a stroke care unit is advocated in order to improve outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Wahab has nothing to disclose. Short-Term Functional Outcome and its Predictors in a Hospital-Based Cohort of Nigerians with Acute Stroke (P5.171)
CONCLUSIONS: About 1 in 3 stroke patients in this cohort had poor functional outcome. In order to improve functional outcome and reduce the burden of stroke in Nigeria, public health education on early recognition and hospital presentation is needed. In acute stroke management, complications should be prevented while speech and language therapy should be instituted to improve functional outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Wahab has nothing to disclose.
