The state of quality improvement and patient safety teaching in health professional education in New Zealand.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the building blocks for improving the quality and safety of healthcare are present, this national study of multiple health professional pre-registration education programmes has identified teaching gaps in patient safety and improvement science methods and tools. A systematic review of leadership training for medical students.
CONCLUSIONS: A wide range of leadership curricula have shown subjective effectiveness, including short interventions. There is limited objective evidence however, and few studies have measured effectiveness at the system and patient levels. Further research is needed investigating objective and downstream outcomes, and use of standard frameworks for evaluation will facilitate effective comparison of initiatives. Development of an otitis media strategy in the Pacific: key informant perspectivesThe Matthew effect in New Zealand rural hospital trauma and emergency care: why rural simulation-based education matters.
We describe a phenomenon of self-reinforcing inequality between New Zealand rural hospitals and urban trauma centres. Rural doctors work in remote geographical locations, with rare exposure to managing critical injuries, and with little direct support when they do. Paradoxically, but for the same reasons, they also have little access to the intensive training resources and specialist oversight of their university hospital colleagues. Sexuality and gender identity teaching within preclinical medical training in New Zealand: content, attitudes and barriers.
CONCLUSIONS: Our finding of limited content is consistent with international literature. Our findings extend the literature by revealing that barriers to greater inclusion of content are not due to overt negative attitudes. Staff responsible for preclinical medical curriculum oversight have positive attitudes about content relating to sexuality and gender identity but perceive curriculum space to be a limiting barrier. Providing departments with regular reports on intern experiences using an adapted version of the PHEEM: completing the feedback loop to enable change in the education and training environment.

Medical students' experience of studying while working part-time and the effects of COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: Almost half of medical students work part-time while studying. Understanding the perceived implications that part-time work has on student education and wellbeing could help medical schools provide appropriate advice and pastoral support for their students.PMID:35772111
