Self-Directed Learning in Medical Education: Training for a Lifetime of Discovery
Teach Learn Med. 2021 Jul 19:1-11. doi: 10.1080/10401334.2021.1938074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIssue: Life-long learning is a skill that is central to competent health professionals, and medical educators have sought to understand how adult professionals learn, adapt to new information, and independently seek to learn more. Accrediting bodies now mandate that training programs teach in ways that promote self-directed learning (SDL) but do not provide adequate guidance on how to address this requirement. Evidence: The model for the SDL mandate in physician training is based mostly on early childhood and secondary educ...

A virtual research showcase and judging platform created from a patchwork of workplace applications
CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic created opportunities for hospitals to explore transforming meetings from primarily live and onsite into hybrid and fully virtual events. While many corporate hospitals have transitioned back to primarily in-person programming, newly adopted online practices such as online judging platforms and automation of continuing medical education tasks will likely remain. As in-person restrictions within healthcare settings are lifted or eased at uneven rates, organizations may continue to explore the value of in-person meetings versus the video conference experience of the same meeting.PMID:37101920 | PMC:...

How a new funding model could create debt-free medical education
Will debt-free medical education be an option for future physicians in training? One medical education expert shared a vision for a bold funding model that would eliminate student debt and improve how coveted medical education dollars are spent. Learn about the new funding model and why debt-free education may be a reality for future physicians in training. What a debt-free model could look like “Out of the $281 trillion spent [on health care] in 2012, the total spend on all of medical education—[including] undergraduate and graduate—is approximately $20 billion in the United States, or 0.68 percent,” Jeffrey ...

Board #144 - Research Abstract From 'There' to 'Here' to 'Elsewhere': Enacting Debriefing in Interprofessional Medical Education Simulation. (Submission #9627).
Conclusion: The results raise questions whether debriefing in medical simulation as modeled on training of qualified health professionals provides a useful framework applied in undergraduate education with students learning to become health professionals. The experiences of the simulation 'there' are intended to become re-contextualised in the debriefing 'here'. Our findings indicate that the socio-material arrangements of the debriefing instead risk taking the students 'elsewhere'. Structure or lack of structure of the debriefing seem both to jeopardise the support of interprofessional learning or even overlook interprofe...
