An electronic decision support tool for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (SPAF): An integrated primary-tertiary care model of care. (S47.001)
CONCLUSIONS: Given that the existing technology base is well established nationwide, it is expected that this could become a national model which would have significant benefits for patient care and healthcare costs across the country.Disclosure: Dr. Jolliffe has nothing to disclose. Rapid Weather Changes are Associated with Increased Ischemic Stroke Risk: A Case Crossover Study (S13.004)
CONCLUSIONS: Rapid decreases in ambient temperature and relative humidity are clinically relevant stroke risk factors under temperate climate conditions. This applies primarily for cardioembolic strokes. Women, older people, and people with higher risk profile for vascular diseases are at advanced risk. Primary care and emergency facilities should be alert to weather-related stroke risk and in particular to early symptoms of stroke under adverse weather conditions.Disclosure: Dr. Rakers has nothing to disclose. The Preventable Stroke: Definition and Implications (S13.005)
CONCLUSIONS: Most acute stroke patients exhibited some degree of preventability. Stroke preventability and treatment were significantly associated, indicating that the most treatable acute strokes paradoxically tended to be the most preventable strokes.Disclosure: Dr. Fisher has received personal compensation for activities with Covidien. Quality Assessment of Vascular Disease Prevention Practices in High Risk Urban Women (P7.139)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite their proven value for secondary prevention, antiplatelet therapy and statins were underutilized in women with prior stroke or TIA. Strategies to intensify vascular disease prevention in high risk urban women and particularly women under 70 are needed. An Association between Diabetes and Late Hospital Arrival among low-income Hispanic Stroke Patients (P7.144)
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of diabetes may be associated with delayed hospital arrival for acute stroke among low-income Hispanic stroke patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.Disclosure: Dr. Ellyn has nothing to disclose. Dr. Williams has nothing to disclose.

Are there Different Rates of Acute Stroke Risk Factors in the South Texas Mexican American population? (P7.146)
CONCLUSION: In the South Texas Mexican American AIS population, there is greater then a three-fold higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes and CHF compared with Hispanics/Latinos in the US. AFIB and CHF are significant predictors of poor outcome in this unique population.Disclosure: Dr. Tekle has nothing to disclose. Dr. Hassan has nothing to disclose. Dr. Malik has nothing to disclose. Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Neuropathological Diagnosis of Primary Alzheimer's Disease (S16.002)
CONCLUSIONS: AF-AD has a more "vascular" and "benign" profile than nAF-AD. Dementia seems to be mediated by brain infarcts rather than by neurodegeneration. Pearls & Oy-sters: Cerebral venous air embolism after central catheter removal: Too much air can kill
A 95-year-old woman with a history of hypertension presented from a long-term care facility for altered mental status in the context of dehydration and hypoglycemia. Multiple attempts to obtain a peripheral IV failed, and a triple lumen catheter was placed into the right internal jugular vein using the Seldinger technique under ultrasound guidance. No complications followed the procedure. The patient was then rehydrated and given multiple ampules of D50, leading to prompt resolution of the hypoglycemia and improvement in her mental status. After resolution of symptoms, the central line was removed, with the head of the bed...

Leukoaraiosis and stroke recurrence risk in patients with and without atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: Leukoaraiosis is an independent predictor of stroke recurrence in non-AF stroke patients. However, leukoaraiosis did not increase the accuracy of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores to predict stroke recurrence in AF or non-AF stroke patients.

Subclinical cardiac dysfunction increases the risk of stroke and dementia: The Rotterdam Study
Conclusions: In elderly free of clinical cardiac disease, worse diastolic function is associated with clinical stroke, dementia, and silent infarcts on MRI, whereas worse systolic function is related only to clinical stroke. These findings can form the basis for future research on the utility of cardiac function as potential intervention target for prevention of neurologic diseases.

Worsening risk factors and more strokes: The dark side of economic growth?
Stroke incidence has substantially decreased in developed countries.1 Health policies implemented in the 1970s to control hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia, smoking cessation programs, and the use of oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation have likely contributed to the decline in stroke incidence.1 By contrast, the landscape in rural China is rather bleak. In this issue of Neurology®, Wang et al.2 report increasing prevalence of vascular risk factors and incidence of first-ever stroke in a Chinese low-income rural population. Since China has experienced impressive development and given...

Association of cerebral microbleeds with mortality in stroke patients having atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: The presence and burden of CMBs were associated with increased mortality in stroke patients with NVAF. Patients with lobar CMBs were at increased risk of death due to hemorrhagic stroke. The diagnosis of CMBs is of value in predicting long-term prognosis in stroke patients with NVAF.
