Abstract 102: Effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Exercises on Upper Extremity Function in the Patients With Acute Stroke Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusion: Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercises are very effective in generating voluntary control and improving functional activities of daily living if given from the first day of stroke. For improvement in arm function the intervention should be started first from scapula. Due to the irradiation effect, there is generation and improvement of tone and power in upper extremity.Acknowledgements: This study was supported by the department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, India.

Abstract 200: Is Risk-standardized In-hospital Stroke Mortality an Adequate Proxy for Risk-standardized 30-day Stroke Mortality Data? Findings From the GWTG-Stroke Program Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: When used to identify outlier hospitals with high or low ischemic stroke mortality the agreement between in-hospital mortality and 30-day mortality was only modest. Using in-hospital mortality data proved to be a poor proxy for 30-day mortality.

Abstract 246: Length of Stay and Its Association With Get With the Guidelines-stroke Award Recognition Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: This study demonstrated that GWTG-Stroke award winning hospitals have a shorter ALOS for ICH and a higher ALOS for SAH than non-award winning hospitals. Those hospitals that have attained gold award status more closely align with national ALOS. Thus, hospitals that are more adherent to guideline recommended care via a quality improvement program may be more efficient when providing care, which impacts hospitals costs.

Abstract 111: Depression as a Risk Factor for Incident Ischemic Stroke Among HIV-infected Veterans Session Title: Poster Session AM
Conclusions: In the VACS, MDD was associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke in HIV+ veterans after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, traditional cerebrovascular risk factors, and HIV factors; however, this association was modestly attenuated after adjustment for cocaine and alcohol abuse/dependence. Future research is necessary to: (a) fully elucidate the relationships among MDD, cocaine/alcohol use, and stroke risk and (b) determine whether intervening on MDD reduces stroke risk in HIV+ and HIV- people. Clinical providers should be aware of the increased stroke risk among HIV+ adults with MDD.

Abstract 209: Analysis of the Costs and Payments of a Coordinated Stroke Center and Regional Stroke Network Poster Session II
Conclusions: This analysis indicates that SLNI has successfully implemented a comprehensive program with coordinated regional care, dedicated high-level staffing, state-of-the-art technology, and process efficiencies that results in better access and care while overall total hospital costs remained unchanged. However, SLNI total operating costs continue to outweigh payments, similar to that observed in previous studies, indicating the need for further reimbursement consideration. Despite such reimbursement challenges, this study suggests a comprehensive stroke care program with improved access and treatment may be financia...

Abstract 230: The Impact of Hospital Closures on Outcomes for Myocardial Infarction and Stroke Poster Session II
Conclusions: We found no evidence that hospital closure was associated with worse clinical outcomes for AMI or stroke for patients. Though there were increased travel times for both conditions, this was likely offset by an increase in hospital quality in the alternative hospitals. These findings should provide some reassurance to those concerned that hospital closures will lead to significantly worse patient outcomes, even for conditions for which timely receipt of treatment is critical.

Abstract 241: Design and Clinical Outcomes of INSTOR (Interventional Stroke Therapy Outcomes Registry) Poster Session II
Conclusions: INSTOR presents instant online graphical and numerical results including "door to CT", "door to IV tPA", "time for return of laboratory results" and "time to angiography", etc. Process trends are presented with graphed monthly median data points overlain by a logistic regression trend line. The computerized multisite database also has the capability of automatically sending text massage or email reminders to designated recipients for follow-up events such as discharge information or 90-day mRS. INSTOR instantly performs complex multifactorial analyses of numerous measures of clinical outcomes for both IV tPA a...

Abstract 17: Hospital Variation in Thrombolysis Times in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients: the Contributions of Door-to-Imaging Time and Imaging-to-Needle Time Session Title: Concurrent I Session C: Young Investigator Award Finalists Oral Abstract Presentations
Conclusion: Compared to door-to-imaging time, imaging-to-needle time was more closely correlated with DTN and a much greater contributor to variability in hospital door-to-needle times. More attention to systems changes that can decrease imaging-to-needle time for acute ischemic stroke patients is now needed.

Abstract 268: Evaluating Pre-Hospital Response When Stroke Symptoms are Present Though Hospital Arrival Mode and Last Known Well to Arrival Times Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: Many stroke patients do not activate 911 or arrive to a hospital in a timely manner. Collaborative attempts by state partners to provide education to the public has not made much difference in arrival mode and arrival from time last known well. Structured outreach activities utilizing initiatives such as the American Heart Association’s signs and symptoms materials can continue to be utilized, but a more comprehensive plan among state stakeholders, EMS, hospitals and the AHA will need to be developed to improve patient awareness and subsequently patient arrival times, resulting in better outcomes.

Abstract 271: Anti-coagulation and Ischemic Stroke Risk in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Atrial Fibrillation: Insights from the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Atrial Fibrillation Registry Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: 1 in 3 patients with atrial fibrillation have CKD. There were similar reductions in the risk of stroke associated with warfarin use for CKD and non-CKD patients. These findings reinforce current clinical practice guidelines, which recommend warfarin use based on thromboembolic risk without consideration for CKD status.

Abstract 149: Effects of Ethnicity and Prior Depression on Hospital Course and Outcomes in First-Time Stroke Patients Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusions: There was a combined effect of ethnicity and depression on LOS where non-Hispanic patients with depression had a shorter LOS than other groups. Although not statistically significant, the findings may be clinically important. It is critical to determine whether these patients had less severe strokes or fewer comorbidities, or if patients were discharged too quickly.

Abstract 201: Are Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Willing to Consider New Strategies to Prevent Stroke? A Qualitative Analysis of Community-Based Focus Groups Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: Focus group participants expressed a fear of debilitating stroke, with varying levels of acceptance of inconveniences and potential bleeding associated with blood thinners. Among a subset of participants, there was willingness to consider new stroke prevention therapies; however, this was preferred with a known, trusted physician. Subspecialized clinicians offering new therapies may be challenged to establish perceived mutual respect with patients, traditionally built over time, and this may be required for patients to consider new therapies. Future research is needed to determine best practices for both establ...

Abstract 066: Perioperative Stroke as a Predictor of Mortality and Morbidity in Patients Undergoing CABG Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Perioperative stroke remains a serious adverse outcome of CABG and is an independent predictor of mortality and morbidity. While rates of stroke and mortality are decreasing, morbidity continues to trend upwards. This study emphasizes the importance of prevention and early intervention in patients at risk for perioperative stroke.

Abstract 305: The Accuracy of Profiling Methods to Identify Hospital Outliers for Ischemic Stroke Mortality in the Presence of Missing Data: Effect of Hospital Volume Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: Reductions in sample size when using a complete case analysis in the presence of missing data have a dramatic effect on correctly identifying performance outliers, especially in lower case volumes. Limitations to identifying ischemic stroke performance mortality outliers - even with complete NIHSS documentation - should be appreciated.
