Reimagining Anticoagulation Clinics in the Era of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Cardiovascular Perspective
Anticoagulation clinics were initially developed to provide safe and effective care for warfarin-treated patients with atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, and mechanical valve replacement. Traditionally, these patients required ongoing laboratory monitoring and warfarin dose adjustment by expert providers. With the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban), many have questioned the need for anticoagulation clinic. However, we think that the growing number of oral anticoagulant choices creates an urgent need for expanding the traditional role of the anticoagulation...

Abstract 374: Quality Improvement Program to Optimize Pre-Operative Evaluation of Elective Cardiovascular Surgery Patients Reduces Complications and Improves Length of Stay Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: A standardized pre-operative evaluation protocol in combination with prophylactic amiodarone in appropriate patients was associated with lower overall complications and a reduction in post-operative AF and LOS. Standardized protocols may enable health care providers to optimize pre-operative management of elective surgery patients and improve care quality and outcomes.

Abstract 151: Outcomes Associated With Prophylactic Amiodarone Protocol in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Single Center Experience Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Implementation of an amiodarone prophylaxis protocol order care set was associated with greater utilization of amiodarone. It was also associated with a modest decrease in the incidence of STS-defined POAF, stroke and MI but was not associated with a change in 30-day mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Further studies are needed to study the cost-effectiveness and risk-benefit analysis of routine amiodarone as prophylaxis.

Abstract 205: New Onset Heart Failure and Adverse Ischemic Events Associated with Amiodarone and Dronedarone Use among Atrial Fibrillation Patients Poster Session II
Conclusions: In a propensity score matched observational cohort study, amiodarone use was associated with higher incidence rate of new onset HF, HF hospitalizations, and TIA as identified from claims. This finding differs from other clinical studies. Future observational cohort studies should incorporate medical record review for validation since information from claims might be insufficient to fully account for underlying patient risk status, or accurately determine if HF was new onset.Key words: amiodarone; dronedarone; atrial fibrillation; heart failure.
