Long‐Term Follow‐Up of Moderately Hypercholesterolemic Hypertensive Patients Following Randomization to Pravastatin vs Usual Care: The Antihypertensive and Lipid‐Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT‐LLT)
The authors conducted a randomized, controlled, multicenter trial, in which they assigned well‐controlled hypertensive participants aged 55 years and older with moderate hypercholesterolemia to receive pravastatin (n=5170) or usual care (n=5185) for 4 to 8 years, when trial therapy was discontinued. Passive surveillance using national databases to ascertain deaths and hospitalizations continued for a total follow‐up of 8 to 13 years to assess whether mortality and morbidity differences persisted or new differences developed. During the post‐trial period, fatal and nonfatal outcomes were available for 98% and 64% o...

Predictors of Uncontrolled Blood Pressure in Treated Hypertensive Individuals: First Population‐Based Study in Lebanon
This study aimed to assess the predictors of uncontrolled systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) in Lebanon among treated hypertensive individuals. The authors included 562 participants 40 years and older. The potential predictors included sociodemographic characteristics, self‐reported health information, and medication adherence. Prevalence of uncontrolled systolic and diastolic BP reached 43.1% and 24.9%, respectively. Independent predictors of uncontrolled systolic BP were older age, male sex, and low and medium medication adherence level. Predictors of uncontrolled diastolic BP were younger age, obesity, and lo...

Blood Pressure Control Provides Less Cardiovascular Protection in Adults With Than Without Apparent Treatment‐Resistant Hypertension
Hypertension control may offer less protection from incident cardiovascular disease (CVDi) in adults with than without apparent treatment‐resistant hypertension (aTRH), ie, blood pressure uncontrolled while taking three or more antihypertensive medications or controlled to <140/<90 mm Hg while taking four or more antihypertensive medications. Electronic health data were matched to health claims for 2006–2012. Patients with CVDi in 2006–2007 or with untreated hypertension were excluded, leaving 118,356 treated hypertensives, including 40,690 with aTRH, and 460,599 observation years. Blood pressure and medication...
