Retinal and Ophthalmic Artery Studies in Ischemic Stroke Patients Using Fundus Photography and Transcranial Doppler Methods (P4.252)
Conclusions:Our study in a robust sample of non-severe stroke patients showed that abnormal retinal AVR is strongly associated with IS patients even after accounting for traditional risk factors. OA-TCD studies, on the other hand, did not have significant associations with stroke group.Disclosure: Dr. Patil has nothing to disclose. Dr. Narayan has nothing to disclose. International Issues: Acute ischemic stroke: An international experience
Mr. Q, a 72-year-old right-handed man with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, recurrent angina, and a 30 pack-year smoking history is a retired scientist living in the United States with his wife. He recently visited his native country, Ukraine, for the first time in almost 30 years. After an emotional day with family members, he returned home and suddenly became diaphoretic and weak, and ultimately lost consciousness. His wife drove him to the nearest open medical clinic. Because it was severely underresourced, he was then emergently taken by ambulance to a larger hospital 6 hours away. He regained consciousness by the time he...

Stroke Mortality Outcomes in Uganda (S32.002)
Conclusions:Our study highlights the poor outcome of stroke patients in southwestern Uganda with an overall 30-day mortality of 38.1%, and identifies NIHSS at admission, female sex, anemia, and HIV infection as predictors of mortality. While there was no statistically significant difference in mortality between hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes in our study, patients with hemorrhagic stroke did have statistically higher levels of impairment on hospital admission and discharge.Disclosure: Dr. Olum has nothing to disclose. Port Harcourt Stroke Registry: A Prospective Hospital Based Study. (P1.074)
CONCLUSION: This Stroke Registry, first of its kind from this region of Nigeria presents a handy tool to track the epidemiology of stroke in this region. It will contribute to stroke prevention by providing the evidence required to formulate policies and measures required to control identified risk factors.Disclosure: Dr. Okunoye has nothing to disclose. Risk factors of stroke recurrence in a low income country: case of Senegal (P6.289)
Conclusions:Stroke recurrence is relatively frequent in Senegal. Frequently, patients are irregularly followed up sometimes because of the unavailability of neurologists and neurology unit in peripheral regions and the cost of treatment. Effort should be done to improve the management of cardiovascular risk factors.Disclosure: Dr. Gams Massi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Nyassinde has nothing to disclose.

Identifying Barriers in Acute Stroke Therapy in Argentina. ARENAS Registry (P2.014)
CONCLUSIONS: Only 47% of patients were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit, rt-PA was underused and initial evaluation was not performed by a neurologist in most of cases. The gap between clinical practice guidelines and real world is wide in Argentina and interventions to improve acute stroke care are mandatory.Disclosure: Dr. Atallah has nothing to disclose. Comparison Of Large Vessel Stroke Patient Outcomes Before And After Initiation Of On-Site Endovascular Stroke Treatment Services (P2.015)
Discussion: For every 30 minutes until reperfusion, the probability of good recovery after large vessel stroke is decreased by about 10%. Transfer delays impede the benefit of endovascular recanalization. In the absence of strategic air transportation systems, rapid deployment of an endovascular team decreases time to recanalization and improves patient outcomes in anterior large vessel stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Shwe has nothing to disclose. Areas of Cerebral Ischemia Have Increased Propensity to Convert to Infarct among Diabetics (P7.155)
CONCLUSIONS: PCT evaluation suggests that a lower CBV could explain worse outcomes among diabetics with stroke. Microvascular disease and endothelial dysfunction should be investigated as potential mechanisms for lower CBV and worse outcomes among diabeticsDisclosure: Dr. Mohamed has nothing to disclose. Efficacy of CT-Perfusion Study in Differentiating Seizures from Acute Stroke Prior to Initiating Tissue Plasminogen Activator Therapy (P02.033)
CONCLUSIONS: CT-Perfusion studies exhibit increased cerebral blood flow in seizures in constrast to decreased blood flow in ischemic events. It can help differentiate an acute stroke from an ictal discharge and can assist in preventing improper use of TPA and hemorrhagic complications.Disclosure: Dr. Ahmed has nothing to disclose. Older Age, Hypertension and Diabetes Influence the Proportion of Salvageable Ischemic Tissue Following Ischemic Stroke (P02.048)
CONCLUSIONS: Older patients and those with HTN or DM are less likely to have a large proportion of salvageable penumbra. While endothelial dysfunction may be a common denominator to these risk factors, the biological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon need to be elucidated.Disclosure: Dr. Mohamed has nothing to disclose. Intracerebral Hemorrhage Associated with Oral Phenylephrine Use (P5.138)
CONCLUSION: It is scientifically plausible that Phe may cause strokes given that it is consistent with the pharmacological properties and adverse event profiles of similar amphetamine-like sympathomimetics. As RCVS has been well-described in association with over the counter sympathomimetics, these lines of evidence support a likely, although not definitive, causal relationship between Phe and ICH.Disclosure: Dr. Tark has nothing to disclose. Clinical Reasoning: An 87-year-old woman with left-sided numbness
An 87-year-old woman with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and peripheral vascular disease presented with acute left paresthesias. On evaluation, blood pressure was 152/77 mm Hg and heart rate 78 and regular. Physical examination had normal results. On neurologic examination, she had normal mental status, decreased sensation on the left face, and normal strength, tone, and reflexes. Cerebellar examination and gait were normal. There was reduced light touch and pinprick sensation of the left arm and leg, with no extinction. Complete blood count and comprehensive metabolic panel were within normal limits, and ECG s...
