Neighborhood socioeconomic status and the prevalence of stroke and coronary heart disease in rural China: A population‐based study
ConclusionsThere were differences in vascular risk across rural villages in China, with higher lifetime stroke and CHD prevalence in higher‐income villages. For CHD, neighborhood effects were stronger among younger residents of high‐income villages. The results may have implications for public health interventions targeting populations at risk.

Burden of stroke in Puerto Rico
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the first cause of long‐term disability in Puerto Rico. Trained staff reviewed and independently validated the medical records of patients who had been hospitalized with possible stroke at any of the 20 largest hospitals located in Puerto Rico during 2007, 2009, and 2011. The mean age of the 5005 newly diagnosed stroke patients (51·2% female) was 70 years. At the time of hospitalization, women were 4½ years older, were less likely to be married (60·2% vs. 39·9%, P < 0·001), smoked less (5·8% vs. 13·4%, P < 0·001), and had significantly higher proportion...

Clinical–MRI correlations in a multiethnic cohort with recent lacunar stroke: the SPS3 trial
ConclusionsIn patients with recent lacunar stroke, infarct location and number have distinctie associations with gender, vascular risk factors, and race‐ethnicity, demonstrating the complex pathogenesis of lacunar stroke and cerebral small artery disease.

The real stroke burden in the Philippines
Stroke is the Philippines' second leading cause of death. It has a prevalence of 0·9%; ischemic stroke comprises 70% while hemorrhagic stroke comprises 30%. Age‐adjusted hypertension prevalence is 20·6%, diabetes 6·0%, dyslipidemia 72·0%, smoking 31%, and obesity 4·9%. The neurologist‐to‐patient ratio is 1:330·000, with 67% of neurologists practicing in urban centers. Health care is largely private and the cost is borne out‐of‐pocket by patients and their families. Challenges include delivering adequate support to the rural communities and to the underprivileged sectors.

Clinical and radiological heterogeneity in aneurysmal sub‐arachnoid haemorrhage according to risk‐factor profile
ConclusionsYoung sub‐arachnoid haemorrhage patients without atherogenic risk factors are rare. Clinical and radiological characteristics vary between sub‐arachnoid haemorrhage patients with different risk‐factor profiles. This clinical heterogeneity should be taken into account in future genetic and other etiological studies.

Differences in ischemic and hemorrhagic recurrence rates among race‐ethnic groups in the PRoFESS secondary stroke prevention trial
ConclusionsWe found a significant difference in myocardial infarction and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage recurrence among different race‐ethnic groups. The risk of recurrent ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke was greater in Asians with high blood pressure.

Statistical analysis plan for the ‘Efficacy of Nitric Oxide in Stroke’ (ENOS) trial
High blood pressure is common during the acute phase of stroke and is associated with a poor outcome. However, the management of high blood pressure remains unclear. The ‘Efficacy of Nitric Oxide in Stroke’ trial tested whether transdermal glyceryl trinitrate, a nitric oxide donor that lowers blood pressure, is safe and effective in improving outcome after acute stroke. Efficacy of Nitric Oxide in Stroke is an international multicenter, prospective, randomized, single‐blind, blinded endpoint trial, with funding from the UK Medical Research Council. Patients with acute ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage and s...

Differences in lipid profiles in two Hispanic ischemic stroke populations
ConclusionWe found significant differences in lipid fractions in Hispanic ischemic stroke patients, with lower total cholesterol and low‐density lipoprotein, and higher triglyceride levels in Mexicans. These findings highlight the heterogeneity of dyslipidemia among the Hispanic race‐ethnic group and may lead to different secondary prevention strategies.

The impact of cerebrovascular disease in Panama
ConclusionSince 2013, both hospitals' intravenous thrombolytic therapy program has been successfully applied as public health policy. A successful campaign on healthy lifestyle must be strengthened through a comprehensive approach with other public sectors in order to have an impact on the population, particularly in children and adolescents.

Current status of acute stroke management in Korea: a report on a multicenter, comprehensive acute stroke registry
There are limited data on the utilization of diagnostics and the variation of treatments at the national level in acute stroke care. Clinical Research Center for Stroke – 5th division stroke registry aimed to describe stroke statistics and quality of care in Korea and to implement quality indicators. Clinical Research Center for Stroke – 5th division registry was established in April 2008 and covers pretreatment demographics, medical and stroke severity measures, diagnostic evaluation, hyperacute revascularization, in‐hospital management, discharge disposition, quality indicators, and long‐term functional outcomes....

The burden of stroke in México
Regrettably, stroke has been scarcely studied in México, and the available data suffer from great variability in diagnostic testing, risk factor definitions, and poor generalizability. The current cumulative incidence of stroke in Mexico is 232·2 per 100 000, whereas prevalence among people aged 60 years or older is 18·2 per 1000. Hypertension and diabetes are the main risk factors. Ischemic stroke is the most frequent sub‐type. Stroke mortality has been increasing during last years, and 30‐day case fatality rate doubles at one‐year follow‐up. A remarkable finding of a hospital‐based registry was that most o...

Carotid intima‐media thickness – a potential predictor for rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms
ConclusionThere is an association between IMT and intracranial aneurysm rupture status at the time of aneurysm treatment. Carotid IMT can be a potential predictor of aneurysm rupture. IMT may thus be a possible adjunct in the risk assessment of aneurysm rupture, and a helpful tool in patient risk stratification and counseling.

Exercise‐induced changes in cardiovascular function after stroke: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsThis was the first study to examine the effects of aerobic exercise after stroke on cardiovascular hemodynamics. High‐intensity exercise improved right‐sided function and early myocardial relaxation. Low‐intensity exercise may also benefit plasma lipid, glucose and inflammatory markers, and ambulatory capacity. This study is an important step towards understanding mechanisms by which exercise may reduce cardiovascular risk and function.
