The Clinical and Neuropathological Correlates of Second-Impact Syndrome: Case Report of a 17-year-old Female Rugby Player (P6.164)
Conclusions:This is the first case study to report the clinical and neuropathological features of SIS. Larger autopsy samples are needed to systematically identify clinicopathological correlates of SIS to facilitate research on risk factors and preventative strategies (e.g., return-to-play guidelines) to prevent unnecessary fatalities in young athletes.Study Supported by: This work was supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (1U01NS086659-01, U01NS093334, R01NS078337, R56NS078337), Department of Defense (W81XWH-13-2-0064), Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Affairs Biorepository (...

Stroke Units with Dedicated Bedside Monitoring Improves Blood Pressure Control (P6.265)
Conclusions:Patients monitored on dedicated stroke units can obtain control of their blood pressure with adequate adjustment of oral medications and require fewer acute IV labetalol treatments than patients who are not being continuously monitored. Prevention of sudden elevations in BP may translate into lower rates of hemorrhagic transformation or hematoma expansion in stroke patients and confer to a better clinical outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Z Arango has nothing to disclose. Hospital Readmissions following Stroke: a Retrospective Study (P6.270)
Conclusions:These results suggest that early inpatient and post-hospitalization interventions to address alcohol abuse and homelessness during the index hospital admission may reduce the rate of hospital readmission within 30 days. The results have prompted interventions on the stroke service such as early inpatient social work and addiction medicine involvement and closer post-discharge follow-up for patients with risk factors of alcohol abuse and homelessness.Disclosure: Dr. Parikh has nothing to disclose. Modified Rankin Scale Disability Status at Day 4 Poststroke is an Informative Predictor of Final Day 90 Outcome (P6.271)
Conclusions:In acute stroke patients, the 4d modified Rankin global disability assessment is highly informative regarding final 3 month mRS disability outcome, alone, and even more strongly in combination with baseline prognostic variables. The 4d mRS is a useful measure for imputing final patient disability outcome in clinical trials and quality improvement programs.Disclosure: Dr. Asanad has nothing to disclose. Evaluation of Antithrombotic Bridging Methods in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (P6.281)
Conclusions:Preliminary data supports against bridging with parenteral anticoagulation in acute ischemic stroke and AF, with a higher incidence of complications observed overall. Higher incidence of extracranial complications observed with bridging anticoagulation and higher incidence of intracranial complications observed from bridging antiplatelet therapy. This finding may be related to the limited number of patients included. A future goal for this project will be to expand the number of charts reviewed to strengthen the validity of these results.Disclosure: Dr. Swafford has nothing to disclose. Risk Factors Among Young Stroke Victims in Underserved Communities: Are These Strokes Preventable? (P6.282)
Conclusions:Although young stroke patients had a higher prevalence of non-standard stroke subtypes, a larger percentage suffered traditional strokes (e.g. small vessel). Modifiable stroke risk factors were common contributors, offering hope that the rising incidence of stroke in the young can be averted.Disclosure: Dr. Wu has nothing to disclose. Difference of Clinical Condition of Ischemic Stroke between Warfarin and Direct Oral Anticoagulants (P6.285)
Conclusions:Ischemic lesion size may be smaller in DOACs compared with warfarin. There is a possibility that direct thrombin inhibitor may provide better outcome compared with other anticoagulants. Larger prospective study should be conducted to confirm these findings.Disclosure: Dr. Nakase has nothing to disclose. Dr. Moroi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ishikawa has nothing to disclose.

Risk factors of stroke recurrence in a low income country: case of Senegal (P6.289)
Conclusions:Stroke recurrence is relatively frequent in Senegal. Frequently, patients are irregularly followed up sometimes because of the unavailability of neurologists and neurology unit in peripheral regions and the cost of treatment. Effort should be done to improve the management of cardiovascular risk factors.Disclosure: Dr. Gams Massi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Nyassinde has nothing to disclose.

Diabetic microvascular complications and stroke risk in the Asian population in Taiwan: A population based case-control study (P6.290)
Conclusions:This study suggests that microvascular complications are significant stroke predictors, with a greater involvement for ischemic stroke than for hemorrhagic stroke. Multiple microvascular complications interactively increase the stroke risk. Our study contributes to the identification of high-risk subjects for stroke prevention and adequate glycemic control.Disclosure: Dr. Chen has nothing to disclose. Dr. Lo has nothing to disclose. Rates of Adverse Events in the Very Old: A Community Anticoagulation Clinic Study (P6.291)
Conclusions:The very old still achieve minimum TTR to experience anticoagulation benefits. Patients older than 95 are at appreciably increased risk of hemorrhage, while ischemic events were overrepresented in ages 90–95. Future work aims to determine risk factors for thrombotic and hemorrhagic events in the very old.Disclosure: Dr. Stanley has nothing to disclose. Dr. Knight has nothing to disclose. More to Atherosclerosis than Stenosis: Symptomatic Carotid Artery with Intraplaque Hemorrhage (P5.285)
Conclusions:Current guidelines only address the degree of arterial narrowing when recommending carotid revascularization procedures for secondary stroke prevention. The most recent AHA-ASA guideline advises against revascularization procedures in less than 50% CA stenosis. These guidelines do not account for plaque morphology that may predict a high risk of early stroke recurrence as demonstrated by our patient.Disclosure: Dr. Rai has nothing to disclose.
