HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor (Statin) Prescribing for Ischemic Stroke Patients at Hospital Discharge (P2.306)
Conclusions: Our observations suggest that neurologists may be more likely to prescribe a statin at the time of discharge for whites in group 3 (diabetics age 40-75 with LDL 70-189 without ASCVD) when compared to their black counterparts. Further research is needed to determine if racial disparities exist in discharge statin prescribing for stroke survivors.Disclosure: Dr. Albright has nothing to disclose. Quality of Care for Patients with TIA with an Eye towards Quality Improvement: How Are We Doing? (P6.036)
Conclusion: Overall, care provided was guideline-concordant, but some patients with TIA are receiving suboptimal care, even among those admitted to a Stroke Center who are routinely admitted or seen by neurology. There are opportunities for improvement in TIA care, especially in statin treatment of eligible TIA patients.Disclosure: Dr. Kalaria has nothing to disclose. Dr. Flair has nothing to disclose. White Matter Hyperintensity in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Correlates with Higher Coated-Platelet Levels (P3.323)
Conclusions: These preliminary results suggest that increased platelet procoagulant potential and age are significant predictors for the presence of WMH in mTBI, many years after the injury. Additional studies aimed at determining the long-term impact of these findings is warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Prodan has received research support from the Veterans Affairs Office. Why Delay the Control of Modifiable Vascular Risk Factors (MVRF) Until the Occurrence of an Ischemic Stroke (iStroke)? (P1.180)
Conclusions: We found that the management of MVRF increases after the first ischemic event and this improves the early prognosis of iStroke (Rankin-based disability). It is important to improve the management of these factors in the setting of primary prevention.Disclosure: Dr. Pagano Ajolfi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Sanz has nothing to disclose. Crossed Subcortical Aphasia (P1.048)
CONCLUSIONS: This patient is a rare case in which right-sided subcortical damage results in aphasia. The most comprehensive evidence on language lateralization comes from functional studies of healthy adults that differ in their degree of handedness. It appears that the degree of right-handedness correlates, with the degree of left hemisphere language dominance.Disclosure: Dr. Murray has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kase has nothing to disclose. Are patients with carotid stenosis receiving optimal medical therapy? (P2.265)
Conclusion: Despite the presence of established large vessel atherosclerosis, a sizable proportion of patients reported that they were not receiving statin therapy or aspirin. Intensification of "real world" medical therapy will be important to reduce stroke rates and improve long-term survival.Disclosure: Dr. Koch has nothing to disclose. Factors predictive of hospice care in patients with Ischemic stroke (P1.077)
CONCLUSIONS: In our patient population, factors associated with hospice discharge were female gender, age > 70 years, prior stroke and not receiving thrombolysis and/ or intervention. Severity of deficits (NIHSS) was not a reliable marker. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Sultan has nothing to disclose. Dr. Lee has nothing to disclose.

Quality Assessment of Vascular Disease Prevention Practices in High Risk Urban Women (P7.139)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite their proven value for secondary prevention, antiplatelet therapy and statins were underutilized in women with prior stroke or TIA. Strategies to intensify vascular disease prevention in high risk urban women and particularly women under 70 are needed. Value of Eye Movement Exam in Aiding Precise Localization in Stroke (P1.016)
We present an unusual presentation of midbrain stroke presenting with bilateral ptosis in an African American male with vascular risk factors and concurrent use of bevacizumab. This case illustrates how detailed knowledge of anatomy and detailed neurologic exam remain valuable tools for localizing and diagnosing subtle presentations of common neurologic disease. Case description: A 69 year-old African American man with vascular risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia and poorly controlled diabetes experienced sudden onset horizontal diplopia associated with fatigue. The patient presented to the Emergency Depart...

Primary Prevention of Stroke in Argentina: a Missed Opportunity? Data from the ARENAS Registry (P1.111)
CONCLUSIONS: this study provides data on stroke risk factors prevalence and control in an Argentine cohort. Our results show a high percentage of at-risk patients without adequate control in the primary prevention setting, denoting a missing opportunity to reduce the burden of stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Atallah has nothing to disclose. Undiagnosed Cognitive Impairment among Patients Referred for Carotid Doppler Evaluation Is Associated with Increased Non-Adherence with Medical Treatment of Vascular Risk Factors (P2.115)
CONCLUSIONS: Non-adherence to medications treating vascular risk factors in patients referred for carotid Doppler evaluation is more common in those with compared to those without cognitive impairment. The association between cognitive impairment and medication non-adherence suggests that cognitive screening may identify a subgroup of patients at higher risk for future cerebrovascular events that would benefit from increased supervision to improve medication adherence.Study Supported by: Department of Veterans Affairs Merit (Award 1I01CX000340) and 2011 VISN 16 grantsDisclosure: Dr. Kirkpatrick has nothing to disclose.
