Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects 8-12 million Americans annually. By 2050, PAD is estimated to affect 9.6-16 million Americans over age 65. PAD develops when the arteries supplying blood to the extremities become narrowed, largely due to atherosclerosis. Typically PAD refers to diseases of the arteries in the legs which are plagued by fatty deposits that progress and result in varying degrees of stenosis.
