How Remdesivir Moved From Back Shelf to Best Hope for Treating COVID-19
This study showed that a five-day regimen is as effective as 10 days–that’s important, doctors say, since it could mean shorter stays in the hospital, which could alleviate some of the burden on the health care system. “Of course we will have to wait for the final review of all the data, but it would be very nice to have an anti-viral that’s efficacious in this terrible illness,” says Dr. Aruna Subramanian, a clinical professor of medicine at Stanford and an investigator on the study. “At least we know that we can help patients with this, and that’s really the bottom line.” T...

Relationship between radiographic joint space narrowing, sonographic cartilage thickness and anatomy in rheumatoid arthritis and control joints
Conclusions Sonographic cartilage assessment in MCPs is closely related to anatomical cartilage thickness. Both JSW and JSN by radiography represent cartilage thickness in the MCP joints of patients with RA quite well. Thus, US is a valid tool for measuring MCT if radiographs are not available or in case of joint malalignment.

Development of an ASAS-endorsed recommendation for the early referral of patients with a suspicion of axial spondyloarthritis
The aim of this work was to develop a consensual recommendation under the auspices of the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) for early referral of patients with a suspicion of axial spondyloarthritis by non-rheumatologists. The development of a referral recommendation consisted of four phases: (1) systematic literature review, (2) the first Delphi round aiming at identification of unmet needs and development of a candidate list of referral parameters, (3) the second Delphi round aiming at identification of the most useful combination of referral parameters and (4) final discussion and formal endor...

Current smoking status is a strong predictor of radiographic progression in early rheumatoid arthritis: results from the SWEFOT trial
Conclusions In addition to previously described predictors, we identified smoking as a strong independent risk factor for radiographic progression in early RA. Trial registration number NCT00764725.

Identification of a genetic variant for joint damage progression in autoantibody-positive rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusions Genetic and functional analyses indicate that SPAG16 influences MMP-3 regulation and protects against joint destruction in autoantibody-positive RA. These findings could enhance risk stratification in autoantibody-positive RA.

Higher disease activity leads to more structural damage in the spine in ankylosing spondylitis: 12-year longitudinal data from the OASIS cohort
Conclusions This is the first study showing that disease activity contributes longitudinally to radiographic progression in the spine in AS. This effect is more pronounced in men and in the earlier phases of the disease.

Periarticular and generalised bone loss in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis: influence of alendronate and intra-articular glucocorticoid treatment. Post hoc analyses from the CIMESTRA trial
Conclusions In early active RA, intra-articular betamethasone injections added to disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) treatment led to minimal loss of hip and lumbar BMD, and the loss could be prevented by treatment with alendronate. Alendronate treatment did not affect radiographic progression.

A genetic variant in the region of MMP-9 is associated with serum levels and progression of joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusions These data indicate that two loci that confer risk to other autoimmune diseases also affect the severity of joint destruction in RA. Rs11908352 may influence joint destruction via MMP-9 production.

Shared care or nursing consultations as an alternative to rheumatologist follow-up for rheumatoid arthritis outpatients with low disease activity--patient outcomes from a 2-year, randomised controlled trial
Conclusions It is safe to implement shared care and nursing consultations as alternatives to rheumatologist consultations for RA outpatients with low disease activity without deterioration in disease control. Nursing consultations can enhance patients’ self-efficacy, confidence and satisfaction.

The ability of synovitis to predict structural damage in rheumatoid arthritis: a comparative study between clinical examination and ultrasound
Conclusions This study confirms the validity of synovitis for predicting subsequent structural deterioration irrespective of the modality of examination of joints, but also suggests that both clinical and ultrasonographic examinations may be relevant to optimally evaluate the risk of subsequent structural deterioration.

Genetic studies on components of the Wnt signalling pathway and the severity of joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusions Patients with RA carrying risk alleles of genetic variants in Dkk-1 have higher serum levels of functional Dkk-1 and more progressive joint destruction over time.
